HELLO
Since the beginning of June, the remarkable Poppies: Weeping Window installation has been in place at The Silk Mill. The poppies look as though they are streaming from the darkness of the Silk Mill’s bell-tower. The original concept by artist Paul Cummins and installation designed by Tom Piper, Poppies: Weeping Window is part of the 14-18 NOW commemorations of World War One and will be on display until Sunday 23 July. In nearly 20 years of working in museums I don’t think I have witnessed a more moving and reflective public response to a work of art.
There is a strong theme of drawing in this summer’s programme. We host a retrospective of the work of Derby born comic artist Liam Sharp, who creates intricate drawings for comics from Judge Dredd to Wonder Woman. Aside from his artwork, visitors will also see his drawing board and pens! We’ll also be extolling the joys of drawing in a participatory exhibition Finding Lines. This will feature loan works from artists such as Rosetti, Henry Moore and Maggi Hambling, to inspire visitors to pick up a pencil and draw. We hope you’ll keep an eye out for lines in your life to capture and share, either in our exhibition or on line using the hashtag #FindingLines. If being creative on a bigger scale is your thing, then both the FIGMENT Derby Festival in August and Derby Mini Maker Faire in October provide the scene to work with other people to combine art and science and be creative.
Amidst this creativity we’ve also found space for radicalism at Pickford’s House. We explore the 200th anniversary of the Pentrich revolution, England’s first genuine proletarian uprising, through a special exhibition. There is also a show of a melange of the shoes by the original Punk designer Vivienne Westwood, a colourful and dynamic display of a private collector. Derby Museums has high ideals and high heels!

The Silk Mill hosts Poppies: Weeping Window, which brings the poppies back to the city where many of them were created. Weeping Window is a cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies seen pouring from a high window to the ground below. The sculpture, by Derby based artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, is part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary.
The breathtaking sculpture, a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads, suspended on towering stalks, was initially conceived as one of the key dramatic sculptural elements in the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London in the summer and autumn of 2014.
During the First World War, The Silk Mill was divided into two businesses - one grinding corn and the other making medical supplies, both of which were integral to the British war effort and scarce by 1916.
As with all 14-18 NOW projects, the presentation of these sculptures across the UK brings the legacy of the First World War to life for new generations.
Derby Remembers
Look out for a programme of cultural events and activities
to commemorate the First World War, allowing
people of all ages to explore their own and the city’s
connection to the conflict.

Currently living and working in California, Derby born writer and artist Liam Sharp is best known for his highly detailed comic work. A Curious Turn15 September - 19 NovemberMuseum & Art GalleryFREE
A Curious Turn presents automata by leading makers of the last 40 years that range from the humorous to the macabre and from the playful to the satirical. Works on show take a look at key automata makers such as Rowland Emett, famous for creating the elaborate inventions of Caractacus Potts in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).
Automata are moving mechanical sculptures that are brought magically to life by sequences of cogs, cams, and levers. They have delighted and bewitched people for centuries. Visitors will be able to turn, push and crank to see many of the pieces in action, while newly commissioned films will show other pieces in motion.

Dear Reader…An exhibition of paintings by Eleanor Watson the winner of the seventh Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award.
16 September - 19 NovemberMuseum & Art GalleryAdmission: Give What You Think
For the last year Eleanor has explored the life stories of a selection of influential Women in the history of Derbyshire. The collection includes interiors, gardens, landscapes and still lives; from photographs taken and found and film stills each connected to a famous protagonist, with biographical elements to prompt a reading of their story. The viewpoint is brought into question as the figure is often absent. There is a suggestion that the viewer may have just disturbed the private world of the sitter.
