CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

There is a lot of established research about the positive influences from drama, theatre and the performing arts, especially for children & young people. The benefits can be physical, emotional and social. Being creative and learning to make creative choices help young people to be better at thinking of new ideas, allowing them to view the world around them in new ways. Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” RYT aims to develop the next generation of ‘big thinkers’ by instilling:

SCHOOLS/CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE/CREATIVE WRITING

FIGHTING WORDS in COLERAINE

PAGE 8 | riversidetheatre.org.uk /Box office: (028) 70 123 123

Following on from a successful pilot project last year – the Riverside is excited to be able to offer more FREE creative writing workshops for school groups, delivered by Fighting Words Belfast.

At a Fighting Words workshop, the group set out on a story-making journey with trained volunteer mentors, working at first collaboratively and then individually to create brand-new tales. All participants leave as published writers with their own storybook.

Fighting Words Belfast is a sister organisation of Fighting Words (Dublin), inspired by 826 Valencia in San Francisco and part of a growing network of creative writing centres around the world. Its patrons are the acclaimed writers Glenn Patterson, Lucy Caldwell, Paul Muldoon, Roddy Doyle, Nick Hornby, and Dave Eggers. The project’s aim is, in Glenn Patterson's words, to ‘empower children and young people to become the authors of their own lives’. All Fighting Words workshops take place outside a classroom setting, helping to ‘de-school’ the creative writing experience. Fighting Words exists to respect and amplify the voices and imaginations of all our young people, and works tirelessly to empower them through the art of story-telling.

Writing mentors needed at RiversideFighting Words workshops are powered by volunteer mentors. No writing or teaching background is necessary to mentor - just an interest in stories and curiosity about children's ideas. Over 300 Fighting Words volunteers have been trained in NI; people 18+ from all walks of life find mentoring to be an uplifting, valuable experience. Training sessions for anyone who would like to be involved and find out more are taking place at the Riverside on:

•Monday 14 October – (10am - 12pm) •Tuesday 22 October – (10am - 12pm)

A limited number of schools workshops will be available in November 2019. Please let us know if your school or class would like to avail of these amazing, free creative sessions, or if you'd like to see them happening at your child's school. In the future, we want to see a dedicated Fighting Words centre at Riverside for Coleraine and surrounding schools. We can't reach everyone at once, but taking note of local interest in the project will help us build it going forward.

Please email the Theatre Manager, Roseanne ([email protected])

for more information on mentoring, to sign up for a volunteer training,

or to register interest in schools workshops.

“Why didn’t you tell me there was danger? Why didn’t you warn me? Ladies know what to guard against, because they read novels that tell them of these tricks; but I never had the chance of discovering in that way;”

Perhaps Hardy’s fictional masterpiece, Tess of the D’Urbervilles traces the life of the young country girl Tess Durbeyfield. Driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D’Urberville family, the innocent Tess crosses paths with her ‘cousin’, the dissolute Alec and the gentleman, Angel Clare, with tragic results. Hardy’s heroine is one of the most moving in all of literature, and her story is hauntingly brought to life in this new version by Hotbuckle.

On Hotbuckle’s Wuthering Heights, “…beautifully handled … this is the company’s best yet” (BBC Radio Shropshire), and Far From the Madding Crowd, “… a magical production” (The Stage).

The Fureys have been entertaining audiences worldwide for 41 years, audiences that have included former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Former Irish President Mary McAleese and the late Pope John Paul.

The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he shared accommodation with then unknown folk singers

Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty and Alex Campbell. In 1969 with his brother Finbar, he was the special guest for the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem throughout the USA and Canada. In 1971 he moved to mainland Europe where he toured for seven years. Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on guitar when they met up in the North East of England while Dave was still a teenager.

PAGE 20 | riversidetheatre.org.uk /Box office: (028) 70 123 123

A portrayal of the life of Eva Cassidy through video, voice and song. Elsa Jean McTaggart presents a tribute to her all-time favourite artist Eva Cassidy. Elsa’s voice has been described as ‘smooth as velvet... sultry’ (Joe Simmons, Edinburgh Tonight) and “One of these very few people with a distinctive enough voice to do the music and songs of Eva Cassidy justice.”(Tom King Southside Advertiser).

An icon of acoustic music. Wistful and emotional vocals, beautiful guitar accompaniment, Eva Cassidy had the power to move audiences through her interpretation of well-known songs. Elsa has devised this very special show to pay homage to this true interpreter of song.

Having been dubbed a similar vocalist to Joan Baez, Miss Irenie Rose now sings the well-loved songs written and sung by Joan Baez. A giant of the folk world, Joan Baez’ music has spanned the generations and become a landmark name.

Choosing a selection of the universally acclaimed songs, Irenie is bringing a taste of Joan Baez to the stage.

From the Isle of Lewis, Miss IrenieRose is a popular artist in her own right. Having toured the country and abroad, appeared on national radio and television stations, played at festivals of international renown and supported some well-known artists, this show is sure to be a treat for the ears.

THE BIGGEST SHOW IN THE COUNTRYWednesday 6 November, 8pm - Tickets £10

Bright Umbrella Drama Company presents

OTHELLOby William ShakespeareFriday 8 November, 7.30pm - Tickets £12 (conc. £10)

It’s 2024, Stormont has been down for years. The UK and Ireland have long disengaged from Northern Ireland.

When an unexpected oil discovery in Mary’s garden suddenlychanges the fortunes of Ulster & its people, is the world ready for the emergence of Northern Ireland as a global economic superpower?

Inspired by ‘The Nolan show’, a daily radio phone in show, TBSITC is a timely anecdote to the ‘troubles’ narrative. A dark new musical comedy. Swapping guns, bombs & bullets for glitter, banter & ballads.

Driven by jealousy, ambition and pure malice, the evil Ensign Iago poisons the mind of General Othello with lies and innuendo concerning his wife Desdemona in Shakespeare’s timeless tale of racism, domestic violence, jealousy, lust and revenge. BUDCo presents a colourful, fast paced production in a modern military setting shot through with humour, pathos and tragedy. The play has much to say to modern audiences in an era of the pursuit of women’s’ rights, the ‘Me Too’ movement and the challenges posed by racism and a fear of ‘otherness.’

Running Time: This production is abridged and lasts around 1 hour, 40 minutes.

“I’ve had nearly eighteen years of yesterdays and tomorrows, and tonight I must remember as many of them as I can.”

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night, he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

One actor brings a host of 22 characters to life in this highly physical and poignant show that charters Tommo’s infancy, teenage years and his “manhood”, and all the trials and tribulations that come with those early years.

Phil’s long career as a songwriter, producer and recording artiste has been recognised over the years.

Very few in the music business can boast of having chart entries in every decade since the sixties. Even fewercan match the range of Phil’s output – from Eurovision winners to folk classics, from tender ballads to sporting anthems, from Luke Kelly to Elvis Presley!

As Phil trawls through his 50 years of creativity thereis no doubt some of the big hits alongside some which he thought should have been hits. An original retrospective on the work of one of our finest, it’s a show for every lover of good music.
