MEMBERSHIP 2020 Step 1: Become a member! Go to https://www.nmeaac.org/ to create your NEW profile account. Check with your district to see if a district PO is used for membership dues or if you are responsible for payment. See nassaumusic.org for more information. Step 2: Nominations: register your students and rank them accordingly. Please note that if Teacher recommendation is ranked over a NYSSMA score you are responsible for the evidence and reason for your determination. NMEA will not discuss these case by case matters with parents. Step 3: Selections: Participate with the selection committee and be a part of the process behind the scenes for balanced ensembles representative of our membership, schools and levels. Step 4: Music Pick Up: Folders will be created for each student selected and are packaged by districts for director/liaison to pick up and distribute to teachers in their district. Step 5: Preparations/Rehearsals: Please incorporate All-County music in your weekly lessons to assist your All-County students to be proficient and confident on all concert pieces. We have found that the more involved the teachers are with their participating students the better experience they have! Step 6: Concerts: Attend concerts as audience members with complimentary admission and/or help out behind the scenes at LIU Post Tilles Center. Most assistance is needed for Division 1 and 2 concerts but we can always use extra support behind the scenes at all levels. Step 7: Post concert season: stay in touch and keep an eye out for your student participation certificates to be distributed at your discretion and hopefully inspire advocacy at district award ceremonies.

3. Student nominations will be accepted from NMEA members only.

4. Nominations for All-County must be submitted from the student’s performance group teacher. If there is no performance group for that instrument/voice the nomination must come from an active NMEA member from their home district. The teacher must be directly employed by the district.

5. A student MUST be a participating member of his or her corresponding school music organization at the time of the nomination and at the time of the performance. Participation is defined as a minimum of 50% attendance and practice at in-school rehearsals where such rehearsals are offered and at concert performances with this same school organization.

6. For PEAK nominations the registration must come from the student’s classroom music teacher. The maximum students per teacher is seven.

7. There are no substitutions and no refunds.

8. Please be sure to double-check the spelling of students’ names. Students’ names will be printed in the program exactly as they are entered into the database.

9. Members may submit one nomination form per division per building in which you teach. Major ensemble teachers of multiple grade levels are guaranteed representation in only one division.

i.e.: Teaching grades 5-6 will have representation in Division 1 OR 2, but not necessarily both. Teaching grades 6-7 will have representation in Division 2 OR 3, but not necessarily both. Teaching grades 9-12 will have representation in Division 4 OR 5, but not necessarily both.

JAZZ AUDITIONS

Students must be registered online to receive an audition date and time. The nominating teacher will be notified by email when audition times have been scheduled. THERE ARE NO AUTOMATICS FOR ANY JAZZ GROUP. No walk-ins will be permitted to audition. All Jazz candidates MUST audition. Students can only participate in one All-County performing group. If accepted into a Jazz ensemble, the student’s name will be withdrawn from consideration for any other All-County ensemble.

INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ REQUIREMENTS: 1. All applicants are required to perform a solo selected from the Jazz solo section of the current NYSSMA manual and sight-read in the Jazz idiom. Students are not permitted to play along with a recording for this portion of the audition. 2. Improvisation is not graded, therefore not required, but is strongly recommended. Students may improvise on the Concert Bb Blues (CD track #7) or concert F Blues (CD track #8) from Volume 1 of Jamey Aebersold’s “Jazz: How to Play and Improvise”. Students are not required to bring this to the audition. The judges will have this CD selection at the audition. Students also have the option to solo on a selection from the Jazz section of the NYSSMA manual that is level appropriate. If they choose that option, they must bring the audio track, as well as a device on which to play it. (ie. CD and CD player, MP3 device and speakers) 3. Students recommended for Jazz may also be placed on any other All-County application. If accepted to a Jazz group, his/her name will be removed from any other group he/she was nominated for. 4. A drum set, amplifier, and patch cords will be provided at the audition site. Drummers must bring their own sticks.

VOCAL JAZZ REQUIREMENTS: 1. Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to be in the group. 2. Students will choose an audition song from the Jazz section of the NYSSMA manual. The song should be sung through twice, with embellishment on the repeat. The embellishment could be a scat style or singing the words again with stylistic interpretation. 3. Students will be asked to sight-read a short diatonic example. 4. Students should provide their own accompaniment CD and an original copy of the music for the judge. 5. Optional blues improvisation may be performed to Jamey Aebersold’s “Nothin’ But Blues” Vol. 2 (CD track #5 or CD track #9)

JAZZ DRUM SET REQUIREMENTS: 1. Demonstrate several measures of groove (time) in each of the following styles:

Jazz - Swing time (several tempos selected by the adjudicator) Rock Time (one tempo selected by the adjudicator, may play a funk beat or rock beat) Latin Time (one tempo selected by the adjudicator, may play a samba, bossa nova, mambo, etc.) Ballad Time with brushes (swing tempo selected by the adjudicator) This demonstration will assess the student's minimum level of competency with the requirements of typical Jazz Ensemble literature. **

**note, sometimes not all of the audition grooves listed above are used in any one All-County Jazz Concert, however, this is still the best way of ascertaining the players' level of competency with the basic requirements of the drummers function. The students, particularly Division I, may not show great competence with all of the required styles - however, the student that shows the most competency with most of the styles will be most likely to serve the group well.

2. Time and Fill -- The adjudicator sets a tempo and calls a style (one style): Jazz (Swing), Rock, or Latin ---the student performs four (4) measures time and two (2) measures fill in that style. The Time and Fill process repeats a number of times to be determined by the adjudicator (at least two times). This demonstrates the players' ability to count time during both the four-measure groove phrase, and the two measure solo phrase, and to switch from groove to solo accurately, as well as the ability to "fill" appropriately in the style of the piece. 3. Demonstrate performance of a current manual listed Jazz NYSSMA Solo for drum set. The higher the NYSSMA level, the more competency displayed.

4. Demonstrate the ability to sight-read, material and tempo to be provided by the adjudicator.

NYSSMA News, September 2019 NYSSMA Executive Council meetings took place this past June 8 and 9 in Glen Cove, and again on August 10 and 11 at the Summer Conference. The following news items and updates are for your information: Please be sure your NYSSMA membership is up-to-date. Support the work of your professional association on behalf of students, teachers, and the music programs of the state of New York. Your NYSSMA / NAfME voice speaks loud and clear when the membership numbers are there for unity and back up. Renew or join at www.nyssma.org. Membership in NAfME includes your membership in NYSSMA; it’s two for the price of one. Please remember, membership IS ADVOCACY and we all need to advocate for our programs. Dr. Steven Schopp will be stepping down as Executive Director of NYSSMA concluding 15 years service as Executive Director. Dr. Schopp served 7 NYSSMA Presidents and Executive Councils. His work with the association and his efforts in the NYSSMA Business Office have been selfless and exceptional. He will be recognized and honored in the coming months for his “career” achievements safeguarding NYSSMA, on behalf of the music students, teachers and administrators of New York State. The Executive Council interviewed three candidates this past summer and Dr. David Gaines was selected to be the new Executive Director by the voting members of the NYSSMA Executive Council. Dr. Gaines is welcomed and wished the best for success with his new challenges beginning this fall. The NYSSMA Government Relations Chair and Advocacy Chair report that the GAAM Act (Guaranteed Access to the Arts and Music) is being voted on in the NY State Legislature as three separate bills: Currently music and the arts are considered regulatory as regards state education mandates. Regulatory labels these programs as “recommended” to be taught. The Part One bill reclassifies the teaching of music and the arts as statutory. Statutory defines music and the arts as core curriculum and therefore must be taught on a mandatory basis. The Part Two bill, to be introduced after Part One becomes law, will require specific seat time to be required for music and arts courses. The Part Three bill will require that music and the arts only be taught by certified music teachers. Part One is expected to be voted on early in the legislative session after which Part Two and Part Three can follow. Once Part One earns a positive vote in our Legislature, there will be a need for a grass roots effort to earn the Governor’s signature. A grass roots effort includes each of us writing to our Governor and asking for his support. Written documentation in support of a bill via snail-mail is needed for a “fat-file” to be created. A fat-file is comprised of the hardcopy letters-in-support of a bill. The fat-file will be delivered to the Governor along with the passed bill for his signature. The fat-file is important as it visually demonstrates support for a bill, which then simply requires the Governor’s signature to become a law. You will be notified and will be provided with a form letter to utilize (if needed) when it is appropriate to assist in the grass roots fat-file effort. New York State has a total of 36 students selected to perform for this year’s All-National Music Ensembles, and 12 additional students selected as alternates. Zone 13, Nassau County has 12 students out of the 36 selected for All-National. The NAfME National Conference and the performance of the All-National Honors Ensembles will be rejoined once again this year, November 6-10 in Orlando, Florida. There were 6,525 students that auditioned for All State this past 2019 Spring Festival Season. There were 892 students selected to perform in this year’s All-State Ensembles, and 684 alternates accepted. Notifications to Principals and Directors of Music are mailed first, and will go out on August 23. Acceptance letters and alternate letters are then mailed to students on August 26th. Once the students receive their notification: - All-State commitment letters are due back from students September 22 - All-State payments are due October 1 - and October 15 - the music will be mailed to All-State students On the ballot this October for NYSSMA Executive Council will be Russ Faunce for the position of President Elect. Adjudicator Orientation will be take place once again this year in Nassau County – at the Kellenberg NYSSMA Festival, March 27 and 28. The application for Adjudicator Orientation is available in this newsletter, as well as online at the NYSSMA website. Piano Adjudicator Orientation additionally will take place this year at the Jericho Piano Festival on March 13 and 14. Please, if you have not already done so, please register for the Adjudicator Orientation, learn about the process, broaden your repertoire, and take your turn adjudicating at least one festival per season. Nassau sends 20,000 students to NYSSMA every spring. Many hands make light work. I respectfully request that we each take our turn and listento someone else’s students as they listen to ours.

The NYSSMA Winter Conference will take place December 5-8 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and adjoining hotels. There were 338 session proposals submitted online through the Submittal Portal and 172 were accepted. Dr. Tim

Lautzenheiser will give the keynote address. Twenty-six performing ensembles applied to perform at this year’s conference and 61 were selected. The New York All-City Latin Ensemble will perform at the opening concert.

Similar to the Joseph R. Sugar NYSSMA Day in Albany which takes place the first Monday in March each year, Hill Day occurs in Washington, D.C. each June. This past June 19 the National Association for Music Education gathered music education advocates from throughout the nation to ascend on Washington for the annual Hill Day event. The day included visitations with legislators to discuss and assist with the continued preservation and expansion of school music programs. NYSSMA Government Relations Chair (GRC) Alan Orloff coordinates the New York delegation. Alan reported this year, in addition to a group of NYSSMA Officers and Executive Council Members, 28 NAfME collegiate students from NY schools participated making NY State the largest in attendance with 34 participants in total. Legislative representatives were overwhelmed by New York as we demonstrated by far the largest group of advocates. It was visually evident that New York remains a leader and a force to be reckoned with by the sheer size and strength of our presentation.

NYSSMA Assignor of Adjudicators Dan Mosher will be stepping down this fall as the NYSSMA Assignor of Adjudicators, and John McNeur will be stepping up. Dan has been a tremendous benefit assisting Zone 13 (Nassau County) as he worked day and night during festival season to fill judging requests and provide a full slate of judges for each of our festivals. Dan is wished all the best in his retirement and John is wished the best in his new role. Admiration and Appreciation: Thank you to the Festival Hosts and Host Districts that worked to serve our students this past Festival Season 2019. Sincere appreciation is extended to the following leaders: Great Neck – Dr. Pamela Levy Manhassett – Dr. Anthony Ambrosio Herricks – Anissa Arnold Roslyn – Kathy Miller Sewanhaka – Noel Monat / Carolyn Goodman Hicksville – Chad Wyman Oyster Bay East Norwich – Anthony Femino Jericho – Kathryn Behr Syosset – Michael Salzman Hempstead – Angel Perez Plainedge – Jessica Yedwab-Strauss Bellmore-Merrick – Cheryl Fontana Uniondale – Kelvin Jenkins Nassau Community College – Susan Weber Hewlett-Woodmere – Walter Lastowski East Rockaway – Peter Ceglio Oceanside – Robert Brase Long Island University Post – Edmund Chiarello Majors – Kevin Bayen Majors – Joseph Owens By email or in person -- please thank these department leaders for their exceptional effort! Please also know that each of these folks assembled teams of teachers and support staff to manage the event. A special thank you as always to Dr. Cindy Bell and the Hofstra Chapter of NAfME for hosting our Majors Evaluations at Hofstra University where over 160 major performing ensembles performed. New for 2020 Festival Season: **Please note: the AREA 3 Piano Festival which usually takes place at Great Neck will be taking place this coming spring at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Adelphi University, spread out over 3 dates, March 17-19. The leadership in Great Neck is running the festival and the same schools and school districts are assigned, however the location is changed to the PAC at Adelphi. **Please also note: the AREA 2 Solo & Ensemble Festival will be hosted this coming spring at Long Island Lutheran High School. The same schools and school districts are assigned to AREA 2. We welcome John Rodis at LUHI who will serve as the Festival Host. The location will be Long Island Lutheran High School on March 23-24. Remember the NYSSMA Manual currently in use is Edition 32, dated July 1, 2018. This manual is in effect through the June 2021 season. All students performing for a rating must play a current manual, Edition 32 listed piece. Students performing work that is not listed in the current manual play for Comments Only. All the best to you as you begin the new school year. Reach me at [email protected] if I can be of any assistance. Respectfully submitted, Ed Chiarello NYSSMA Zone 13 Representative
