What’s happening on the water from ... Autumn 2017 DICKEY 45 There are sport fishing boats and there are family cruisers, but there aren’t too many family sport fishing cruisers. The most recent vessel to emerge from Dickey Boats’ Napier facility is the Dickey Semifly 45, another aluminium boatbuilding triumph. In many respects an upscaled, twin-engined version of Dickey’s popular, multi-award winning Semifly 32, she’s much bigger and even more capable, but equally well-designed and built. When the boat was commissioned she came in 400kg under the specified design weight and floated absolutely level, something Jason Dickey and his design team are very proud of. The centre of gravity (CG) was exactly where they wanted it to be. First Edition weighs-in at 12,750kg in light ship and reached 34 knots on launching day, fully-loaded with four people aboard - faster than her design spec. The Semifly 45 has a long waterline length due to her distinctive Dickey bow. She cruises efficiently at anywhere between 20 and 29 knots and generally runs flat. One of the attributes of IPS is a very flat fuel burn at cruising speed. First Edition burns pretty much the same amount of fuel per nautical mile at 20 knots as she does at 30, depending on the conditions. Her fuel burn at 28 knots is four litres per nautical mile, both engines. COOL AND COMPACT

Volvo Penta’s new compact, 4-cylinder D2-60 engine is part of its expanded 13-75 hp range, and is compliant with European Union Recreational Craft Directive Stage 2 (RCD II) emissions regulations – as are all engines within the

company’s marine leisure range.

The new four-cylinder D2-60 engine by Volvo Penta achieved its international premiere at boot Düsseldorf (the Düsseldorf boat show) in Germany in January 2017. The engine is available for both S-drive and shaft installations. It is suitable for sail yachts and other displacement boats which require compact diesel engines complemented by excellent performance. It is charge air-cooled with an output of 60 hp at 3000 rpm. The engine is low in weight and provides excellent fuel consumption, low noise and low vibration. RCD II regulations came into force in January 2017 and are applicable to all engine-powered leisure watercraft of 2.5m to 24m (except racing boats, hydrofoils and hovercraft) and relate to both exhaust and noise emissions. The engine is also compliant with the US EPA Tier 3 emissions standards.

WHITE POINTER 2017

FISHING TOURNAMENT

AT WAIHAU BAY

White Pointer Boats held their annual fishing tournament at the end of February at Waihau Bay. This tournament was the best to date, with good seas and lots of fish. There were thirty three boats participating and twenty one of them were powered by Volvo Penta engines. Up until February there had only been a couple of fish caught in the area and there had been a very slow start to the season. Tony, from White Pointer Boats, was told that it must be the shape of the White Pointer hulls in the water and the Volvo Penta engines that called the fish into the area for the first time this season. Almost every boat had some bill fish action over the three days with a number being able to put a tag in a fish. The heaviest marlin landed was off “Bad to the Bone”, 203.1kg blue which was caught by Riley Hare. It was great to see that yellow fin tuna are still about with a 30.40 kg caught off “Optimum” by Sam Christiansen. There were some other good fish caught, a very good yellow tail kingfish (30.1kg) off “Ono” by Jake Payne and a great snapper caught by the youngest comp member George Lendich off “The Outlaw”. The main prize for the top overall boat went to “Optimum” and their crew of Sam and Dave Christiansen with their tag and release marlin and boated yellow fin tuna. Well done. Sam and Dave won the Air NZ Mystery Break Weekend prizes, that were sponsored by Volpower NZ Limited.

PELIN CHALLENGER

VOLVO TO VOLVO REPOWER WHANGAREI MARINE SERVICES

ARE ON THE MOVE

On Easter weekend, 14th to 17th April, Whangarei Marine Services (formerly Ray Roberts Marine) will be moving to premises at 93 Port Road in Whangarei. They had outgrown their workspace at Riverside Drive so they decided to move to more centrally located premises with a much bigger workshop, showroom and storage facility. Even though their physical address has changed all their contact details will remain the same.

Fuel consumption at cruise revs has dropped from about 24 litres per hour to 17 litres per hour with a cruise speed increase of about 4-5 knots. This repower has increased cruise speed, reduced fuel consumption and raised reliability confidence levels as unpredictable weather is prevalent in this area.

HYPE, is a 36ft Pelin Challenger situated in Mana Marina which is used for recreational fishing and cruising in the Marlborough Sounds, Durville Island area.

The vessel was initially set up with a Volvo Penta TAMD61 250hp. The decision was then made to repower the vessel as the owner wanted improved reliability.

Gavin Brown, from KP Marine, was consulted over the repower. He recommended the Volvo Penta D6-300HP engine.

The top speed has gone from 14 knots to 19 knots, with a cruise speed of around 16 to 17 knots.
