CARLA HENTON

Hi, I’m Carla Henton from Dodge City, Kansas, USA. I’m the mother of two musical kids and the wife of my iron man (he’s a metal artist). I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by talented women all my life starting with my mom and grandmother who taught me to sew and now with the fun online sewing and crafting community. I’m a published sewing and quilting designer. I enjoy creating tutorials and have organized blog hops and designed Blocks of the Month. You can find me at my blog, Creatin’ in the Sticks.

PATTERN CUTTING: Use a sharp pair of fabric scissors or a rotary cutter to cut your pattern pieces. Then, use pattern weights or straight pins to secure the paper pattern pieces to your fabric. Just make sure to try and cut without lifting the pattern and fabric from your cutting table. (And don’t forget to transfer all of your markings before removing the paper!)

Instructions:

Please read through all instructions before starting. All seams are stitched at ¼” throughout unless otherwise stated.

A walking foot on the sewing machine is necessary to stitch through all the layers evenly.

Step 1: Print the 3 pattern pages. Make sure to print them as the original size. Using the scallop pattern pages, tape the left and right pattern pieces together,

lining up the dotted lines.

fig. 1

Step 2: Referring to the cutting instructions, cut all fabric pieces A–G on the fold of both fabricsand 4 pocket pieces.

Step 3: Prepare the apron waistband ties. Pair strips “B” and strips “C” together with right sides together on a cutting mat with the grey strip on top on one and the pink strip on top on the other.

Measure 2 ½” from the short end and make a mark. Cut from the corner to the mark on both pieces as shown in the picture below.

Next pin the strips together as laid out and stitch ¼” along both long sides and the triangle shaped short sides. Back stitch at the beginning and the end. Clip the corners and

turn the strips right side out. Push out the corners on the ends with a point turner or chopstick and press. Now, top stitch around the 3 stitched sides of the waistband ties.

fig 3

Step 4: Prepare the main side of the apron by first preparing the pocket. Pin Pocket pieces pink “H” together with the right sides together. Stitch around the pocket leaving a

2” opening on the straight side for turning right side out. Clip the curves and corners. fig. 4

Next, turn the pocket right side out and press opening closed. Stitch the opening closed by hand or close it with top stitching around the pocket.

Place the grey “D” main body piece on surface, right side up. Measure from center fold to the left 4 inches and down 2 ½” from the top and make a mark.

fig. 5This is where the right corner of the pocket is placed.

Pin the prepared pocket into place on “D” and stitch around the pocket following the top stitching and leaving the top open.

Pin and stitch the grey “D” to the pink “E” strip with a ¼” seam. Next stitch the grey “F” strip to the “E” strip, and finally stitch the scallop pink “G” to the bottom of the “F” strip. Press the seams.

fig. 6

The last step to preparing the main side of the apron is to gather the top edge “D” of the apron by machine stitching a basting stitch 1/8” from the raw edge. Pull the stitches to gather the edge so that the

measurement is 24 ½”. This will make the apron fit on the pink waistband, “A”. Tip: Tighten the top tension on the sewing machine and the gathers will practically make themselves.

Pin the main apron unit to the pink waistband “A” with right sides together and stitch a ¼” seam.

9

Press the apron and waistband. Now, repeat all the steps in step 4 for the reverse side of the apron.

Step 5: Stitch the waistband ties to the waistband. Place the pink waistband “A” apron right side up and pin the prepared waistband ties to the short ends, centering them to allow for a ¼” seam on the top.

The pink sides of the ties will be down and the grey side up. fig. 8

Stitch 1/8” from the edge to attach the ties. Once the ties are stitched to the waistband, pin the ties out of the way of the apron edges.

fig. 9

Step 6: Pin the reverse apron to the main apron, matching all the seams. Be sure to leave a 5” opening on a side for turning the apron right side out after stitching.

With the waistband ties out of the way of the seams, stitch ¼” around the apron and waistband remembering to backstitch at beginning and end.

Clip all the corners and curves.

10

Now, turn the apron right side out and press. Place pins around the apron and waistband to hold the pieces in place.

fig. 11

To finish the apron, top stitch around the apron and the top and bottom of the waistband.
