Sugar and Artificial SweetenersWhen you are pregnant, you should try toavoid, even better cut out, sugar and artificialsweetener from your diet. Don’t make themistake of replacing sugar with Sucralose,aspartame or other artificial sweeteners, whichare potent chemicals with questionable healthconcerns. In fact, there affect on the fetus isnot yet established and there is a belief theycould pose a health risk to your baby.

Sugar is responsible for a number of pregnancyconcerns but the most worrisome is the fastrelease of insulin in your body. This can result inyour pancreas falling short of being able to do itsjob properly, which in turn leads to an increase inblood sugar levels in the body.

Even if you don’t suffer from high blood pressureor gestational diabetes, if you have a high bloodsugar, it can lead to birth complications, a verylarge baby causing labor problems, and excessiveweight gain. If you must use sugar or you wantto satisfy a sweet tooth look for raw honey,agave syrup, stevia, etc.

Caffeine

Since caffeine stimulates the nervous system, it isimportant to cut your caffeine intake. It will also leachcalcium, which is necessary during pregnancy. Whenyou are depleted of calcium your baby will also bedepleted, and so the fetus will draw on your calciumreserves, which in turn will decrease your calciummore. It becomes a vicious circle. Caffeine is also adiuretic and so there is a danger of becomingdehydrated. This is especially true if you are sufferingfrom morning sickness. Drinking too much coffee canactually result in it crossing the placenta and affectingyour baby.

Processed Foods

Processed foods contain all kinds ofpreservatives and fillers, which are not healthyand can affect the health of your baby. They aregenerally also high in sugar and sodium, whichshould be avoided. Rather than processed whynot opt for whole and organic foods, which aresafer and healthier food choices.
