Sandy Birtcil’s Guidelines Regarding Thesis Check-In Process
1. You will need to complete a faculty evaluation when you turn in your thesis/project. Please give yourself extra time because there will be no exceptions.
2. Attach a proof of attendance showing completion of Formatting Workshop and Human Subjects Approval. If proof is not attached to the project, it will not be reviewed until the print out is received by the SW Division office.
3. Sign-In your thesis/project in the check-in binder.
4. The department will email you when your thesis/project is ready to be picked up. Please remember there is a 72 hour or more turn around period, depending on volume. DO NOT CALL THE OFFICE to see if your project is ready. If you do not receive an email by the 4 th day (NOT INCLUDING WEEKENDS) you may email Sandy Birtcil at [email protected]. Due to workload volume, please do not email Dr. Bankhead about your thesis at this time.
5. Once your thesis is signed, you will need to turn in one (1) copy from title page through abstract to the Division of Social Work.
6. *** NOTE: THE DIVISION OF SOCIAL WORK WILL NOT MAKE COPIES FOR STUDENTS.
Once Your Thesis/Project Has Been Signed Obtain a thesis/project receipt form: Microfilming and Binding Receipt from
the Graduate Studies Office located at RFC 206 or from their website.
Take receipt to Student Financial Services in Lassen Hall and pay $60.00 binding fee. The receipt must accompany your completed Thesis/Project when it is submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies.
Make 1 copy of your entire thesis/project on 24lb. 100% cotton paper
Make an additional copy of your title pages through abstract for Graduate Studies.
Turn the following in to Graduate Studies Entire thesis/project on good paper One additional copy of title pages through abstract Microfilming and Binding Receipt Proof of attendance of Formatting Workshop
Do’s & Don’ts Avoid biased and pejorative language. Do not use 'men' to refer to all
adults. Some commonly used acceptable references to populations: African Americans, Native Americans, sexual orientation (not sexual preference), people with depression and people with AIDS (not depressives or AIDS victims or sufferers), Asian Americans (not oriental), older persons (not elderly), lesbians and gay men (not homosexual; APA, 2001, pp. 63-76).
Avoid one-sentence paragraphs.
Avoid lengthy paragraphs. A paragraph should be no longer than one double-spaced page.
In general, use professional journals and avoid using 'popular opinion' journals and magazines, or both (i.e., Time, Newsweek, USA Today, and National Enquirer).
Do not put running headings on each page.
Do not list the abstract in the Table of Contents.
Do’s & Don’ts Continued Electronic references should have DOI (digital object identifier) number
If they are used, horizontal rules (lines) should be typed into tables; do not draw them in by hand.
Hyphenation should not occur at the end of lines, only between words when necessary.
Justification should be set to "off" or "left margin only" (the right margin should be uneven). The only exception is the abstract, which is left and right, justified (block style).
Use bolding or italicization for emphasis sparingly or avoid altogether.
Do not rely on typists for format. Check it out yourself. If you have any questions regarding university guideline requirements or binding and microfilming questions you should contact Graduate Center staff at (916) 278-6470.

Idea was to have employers talk about what they look for in job applicants in the current economic climate.
Have students set a course for planning their job search process.
Thesis/Project Roadblocks Human Subjects Approval Data collection & retrieval Irregular meetings with advisors Procrastination Revision process – waiting for
feedback on 1 chapter before moving forward
Family, medical & personal crises Incomplete volume of work – Chpts
1-3, 4 & 5 and formatting Time planning – multiple drafts, time
in takes to receive reviews, complete, edit, revise and respond in general to faculty comments
Formatting…..

Manage the process with timelines you develop for yourself;Date id when you drop chapters for review and when received;
Give your thesis professor all the information they need to evaluate your work – make it convenient for them;
Send them notes to tell them what you have delivered to them;
Recognize the challenges of a course that doesn’t have a regular meeting day and time and make adjustments accordingly;
Don’t avoid your thesis advisor
