Welcome
Active Together is a county wide scheme designed to encourage more people to take part in physical activity and achieve up to and beyond 3x 30 minutes a week of exercise.
Our key aim is to co-ordinate and increase opportunities for all residents in North West Leicestershire to participate in physical activity sessions in varied community venues and outdoors. You can take part for free or at a small fee.
Over the coming months the Active Together Team will be developing and delivering a number of key projects designed to encourage and promote participation in physical activity. These include the fi rst Active Together “Dance-a-thon, a “New Year New You” Campaign, Urban Boot Camp, Comic Relief Fun Run and new initiatives for older people. So remember eat well, move more, live longer
Welcome to North West Leicestershire District Council’s Active Together Programme. We are pleased to offer a varied range of walks, cycle rides and physical activities covering different areas of the district to suit all tastes.

Testimonial “Andrew and his team have worked with East Midlands Airport to encourage their employees to recognise the benefi ts of choosing a healthier lifestyle. We use regular health checks to monitor improvements which motivates people to do even better next time. Active Together provided taster sessions in different types of exercise which have resulted in regular classes being held after work. People have taken up new sports and are enjoying being more active. They are taking part in organised sporting events and setting up their own team events. The partnership East Midlands Airport has with Active Together is proving benefi cial for employer and employee alike.” Anne Kilker, Safety Offi cer, East Midlands Airport.

NGB Back to SportNorth West Leicestershire has launched its back to sport programmes in April. If you’re wondering what back to sport is all about. It’s about getting back into sport giving you the opportunity to participate with a selection of Sport’s to take you back to your school day’s or to try something new to get you active.
National governing bodies of sport (NGBs) have a vast network of community clubs, coaches and volunteers that make sport happen and help to keep the sport sustainable.
The Football Association (FA) is a good example of a governing body within the UK and is one of the most advanced and successful throughout sport.

Exotic Goings On in Thringstone
Denise Abbott is one of the regular attendees who was initially ‘dragged along’ by her daughter, but now freely admits that this is ‘the best hour of her week’. “I didn’t know what to expect at fi rst, and I was quite nervous to begin with, but that feeling quickly disappeared, and now it is the highlight of my week. I injured my shoulder last year, which required surgery, but the Belly Dancing really helps with my mobility, its great fun and you don’t have to be perfect!”
Sarah Goodlad is the Belly Dancing instructor and she was introduced to this novel form of exercise whilst looking for ways to improve the strength in her back, almost fi ve years ago. “I love the way belly dancing gives you a gentle cardiovascular work-out whilst also transforming your body shape, but you hardly notice as you are having so much fun. The ladies attend these classes with boundless energy and enthusiasm, irrespective of ability and mobility levels – our ultimate aim is to get as much enjoyment as possible, from our hour together”.Denise, a sprightly 61 years young, plans to carry on with the belly dancing classes, alongside her other Active Together class; ‘Showtime Dance’. I really would like to encourage other women to take part, it’s not about being good, it’s about enjoying your-self and socialising with new people”.

It might come as a surprise to many, but 30+ ladies congregate at Thringstone Community Centre every Thursday evening, complete with enthusiasm and a sense of fun, to learn the art of Belly Dancing. A negative aspect of modern life is that we don’t take enough exercise to help our bodies stay fi t and healthy. Computers, cars and other modern conveniences result in long periods of inactivity - muscles that don’t get used much become “fl abby” and our general health begins to suffer.
Well the answer for the ladies of Thringstone was to enrol in a Belly Dancing class, which is part of a countywide initiative - Active Together, which is managed by Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport.

Running scheme helps heart attack survivor on the road to recovery
A HEART attack survivor has spoken of her fi ght back to fi tness thanks to a council running scheme.
Jacque Chapman, 52, of Coalville, said North West Leicestershire District Council’s Run In England off-road running club has helped boost her confi dence and fi tness – and make new friends - since suffering a heart attack last November. Now she is encouraging new members to sign up to the scheme.
The group is holding a new beginners’ session for people who are only just taking up running or those who haven’t donned a tracksuit or trainers for years.
Jacque said: “Not only has it helped improve my fi tness, it has given me back my confi dence. When you have a heart attack, you lose confi dence in what your body can do.
“But because there is no pressure on you to run fast or long distances at the group, you can run at your own pace and in your own time.
“Everyone is really friendly and I now meet some of the girls for coffee on a regular basis!”
“A friend of mine recommended the group and so I joined and have never looked back,” said Jacque.
“You get to run in beautiful countryside, it’s challenging – but there’s no pressure on you to be Linford Christie or anything! It boosts your confi dence and helps your fi tness – I just love it!”
People from all abilities are catered for at the off-road running group and no running experience is required. It is a friendly and sociable group which fosters a relaxed and non-competitive environment.
Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Leisure Champion for North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Jacque’s story highlights exactly why these kinds of groups are a vital part of the community and stresses how important leisure services are in helping boost fi tness and health in the district.
The groups currently have an age range of 16-60 and the vast majority of members were complete beginners when they fi rst started. Beginners are encouraged to take things at their own pace.
The sessions cost £2 - although the fi rst session is free and are held at the following venues:
Hermitage Leisure Centre, Whitwick, LE67 5EU Every Monday 9.30am start ( Meet outside entrance to centre)
Staunton Harold, Ashby de la Zouch, LE67 1RU Every Tuesday 9.30am start (Meet at Garden Centre Car Park)
Sence Valley Forrest Park, Ibstock, LE67 6NW Every Thursday 9.30am start (meet at upper car park)
Sence Valley Forrest Park, Ibstock, LE67 6NW Every Saturday 9.00am start (meet at upper car park)
Running is recognised as one of the best sports for managing weight and aiding weight loss. Running burns around 500 kcals per hour or 100 calories per mile so if you start running and eat sensibly you will see a change in shape and size.
