-Summertime is here and with the new spell
numerous activities to enjoy with family and
friends. Let us take advantage of sunny days and
warm weather that is suitable for being outdoors
whether on the beach or in beautiful parks which
are located throughout Florida. When visiting
national parks take the time to tour them, begin-
ning with the gallery-shop where they usually have
good information on the flora and fauna of the
area, talk to those who work there and read
some of the information on what you can enjoy in
their facilities and in addition to learning, you will
not miss the best that they have to offer. Walk-
ing through parks and understan-ding the rela-
tionship that binds us to them will make our
children aware of the importance of loving and
caring for nature while enjoying it.
In this edition we have the involvement of
Marine Biologist and diving instructor Ramón
Llaneza, talking about the types of diving,
places to do so, and the beauty below the sea.
Also, let us consider options to explore new
and exciting beaches, summarized in our count
of the 10 best beaches in Florida, each with
multiple options and things to do ranging from
fishing, diving, barbecues and even cam-
ping...Perhaps you miss one you like to visit!
The season for hurricanes or tropical
cyclones began June 1st and ends on Novem-
ber 30th, they have a hot core in which the
average maximum wind at sea level is 118
Km/h or higher. Take the necessary precau-
tions to spend this time without drawbacks.
A good tan is great, but not in excess. Remem-
ber, the sun is responsible for more than 75% of
skin cancer as well as premature aging. A good
sunscreen with superb protection, resistant to
sweat and waterproof is the perfect solution.

AFTER THE SUNSET
Sambaa very sexy dance
The samba has its roots in Africa, Angola,
where before it became a Latin American
music genre recognized around the world,
was a fertility dance where they did rubbing
of the navels. (semba means navel in the
bantu language).
Its rhythm is linked with group dancing
which dances in circles or double lines,
evoking the meetings carried out by
runaway slaves in the jungle in order to
worship their gods. In contrast, lounge
samba is danced at the rhythm of 2/4
and in couples who are often separated to
carry out individual steps. The samba
dancer has to play with the girl and be very
exuberant and also requires precise pelvic
movement, that without it the dance would
lose its grace.
In the early twentieth century, samba
began to expand in Rio de Janeiro.
Later they adopted different rhythms such
as bossa nova set by European
immigrants and in the mid twentieth
century, migrated to America where it
gained enormous popularity. Those
responsible for this dissemination were
Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
In the 30’s a group of musicians led by
Ismael Silva founded the first Samba
School, Deixa Falar, who was in charge of
making all of the arrangements for
carnival parades and with the support of
President Getulio Vargas, samba became
de official music of Brazil. The samba outfit
is quite provocative. It also consists of a
headdress of spectacular feathers of many
colors and high heel shoes.
The new wave of rock music and disco
music that emerged in the 80’s displaced
samba; forcing it to renew itself and thus
resulting in a new musical style that was
called Pagode. Its artists were Zeca
Pagodinho, Seba Pastelero, Jorge Aragao,
Almir Guineto and Revelacao. Pagode
means celebration, gathering with plenty
of food, music, dance and feast celebrated
by the lower class of Rio de Janeiro where
they adopted pop influences and electric
instrumentation.
Today there is distinction within the samba
rhythms as follows: Neopagode (whose
lyrics emphasize sex, with groups such as
Terra Samba and E o Tchan) samba-
enredo (the song is sung by male vocalists
accompanied by a little guitar and drums
producing a complex sound called
batucada, its representatives are
Martinho da Vila, Neguinho de Beija Flor y
Jamelao), samba-reggae (a blend of
Jamaican reggae with samba drums) and
samba de roda (traditional Afro-Brazilian
dance associated with capoeira).

Isitdangeroustodivewithsomany
sharksinFlorida?
Well no! In my experience, sharks are the
victims of the tabloids and lack of knowledge
in general. They are wonderful creatures,
essential to life on the planet and with which
one can interact amicably when we dive, but
are gene-rally extremely timid and move
away. To dive with friendly sharks I
recommend Shark Canyon.
Tellmealittleinsightinto
cavediving?
That is one of my favorites…Florida is
consi-dered the world capital in cave
diving. From Ocala to Pensacola,
there are the so-called “springs”
which are a network of underground
rivers of thousands of kilometers
long that have dug into the rocks
below the ground creating a huge
and terrific network of caves. This
specialized diving requires great
preparation and training and it’s
considered one of the most
dangerous sports.
Wrecks…thatsoundsliketalesof
piratesandtreasure?
This is a topic that we don’t talk about much,
every diver knows it, but it’s like a taboo. It is
true that Florida is full of underwater trea-
sure, the product of 500 years of history
and marine shipwreck. Each diver always
has the fantasy of fin-ding treasure and he is
watching to see something shiny under a coral
or half buried in the sand to become rich.
There are many stories about treasure found
off the coast of Florida. I have special equip-
ment to detect metal and when I dive, I am
always waiting to find one.
Diving is a very safe activity that requires
constant training and practice, it is a family
and partner’s sport, which is easy to learn
and which has virtually no restrictions on
anyone. I invite you to explore new horizons
and to enjoy one of the activities that make
Florida so famous.
RAMON LLANEZALike a fish in the water
Florida is synonymous with diving world-
wide. Scuba diving is an activity that
attracts millions of tourists, is a worldwide
renowned destination. It is one of the few
places where you can swim with dolphins,
turtles, sharks, grouper guides of 300
pounds (Goliath grouper), manatees and a
sunken ship on the same day. The wealth of
the marine life found is due to the strict poli-
cies of protection and conservation of the
state, outreach programs centers, research
and protection foundations and environmen-
tal awareness of its inhabitants. We wanted
to talk to an expert in scuba diving and who
better than Ramon Llaneza, Marine Biolo-
gist, renowned environmentalist who is also
a technical and advanced scuba diving
instructor.
WhatmakesFloridasospecialcompared
tootherplaces?
The infrastructure for safe diving practice is
one of the attractions; it has many dive
centers and operators to practice all the
different levels of the sport. There are
scuba instructors available for all types of
diving, with the most advanced levels of
scuba diving education in the world,
hundreds of specialized charter boats to
take you to the best underwater experi-
ences, medical centers specializing in diving
accidents with hyperbaric chamber care.
Here in Florida we have all of the options
available for all types of diving.
Youspeakoftypesofdivinghowisthat?
Well it is actually a professional sport and
extremely broad because of the variety of
conditions and environments of the under-
water world. First I want to emphasize the
re-creational diving sport which the entire
family can enjoy from age 10 up to any age,
when children and parents join in an activity
this complex it creates a very special
connection between them to last a lifetime.
Imagine a family experience diving in a coral
reef full of marine life such as turtles,
grouper and dolphin at depths of 60 feet
and taking underwater pictures. It is an
exceptional family therapy and then you have
the skill levels and techniques that you can
acquire through practice and advance train-
ing and the various specialties.
Whatarethebestplacestodive?
Throughout Florida, we have excellent dive
spots but here in Palm Beach County there
are some of the most spectacular sites,
coral reefs full of rich marine life, giant
sponges and if you want to dive with turtles
and friendly Goliath grouper go to the Boyn-
ton Beach coral reef.
TASTING
The Gourmet Corner
This time I am going to talk not about
restaurants, but about eating habits.
It is true that we eat out of sync with our
body needs. The amount of food we need
to keep our system going and in good
shape has to do with our size, age and
gender. The truth is that very few of us take
all these factors into consideration, and as a
result, we unknowingly add more pounds.
Someone once said, “We are what we eat”
so we should pay more attention to what we
feed our body. If we are going to pay atten-
tion, we would eat less and exercise more
for proper fitness and good health.
We are living in fantastic times where we
have information about everything, and that
includes, of course the food we eat. Never
before could we have known more about
calories, ingredients, and nutrient contents
of foods like today. One of the things that
we could do is to get in step with seasonal
changes. Summer is beginning; hot
weather is knocking our door, so we should
change our eating habits. Changing means
we eat lighter, less meat, and consume
cooler things like cold soups, fresh salads,
and fresh fruits that the growing season
provides in beautiful shapes, colors and
tastes. This way, we are in sync with
Mother Nature and can stay healthy.

When we heard that a restaurant has
operated for over 30 years in one place,
we had no doubt that they must be offer-
ing something good, more if pizza and
Italian cuisine is in question. We were
pleasantly surprise with a family owned
place, served by its owners, bright
spaces filled with groups and families
accompanied of grandparents and chil-
dren. The menu aside from Italian food,
offered Greek food. Greek salad circu-
lated in the trays of all the waiters, so we
knew it was very popular. We ventured
to try a different pizza and our choice
was very wise.
The Greek pizza was so good! It’s made
with crispy bread not so thin, topped with
feta, mozzarella, garlic, tomatoes, olives
and spinach. The garlic and spinach
gave it a nice delicate flavor...it was my
favorite!

Dr. Sara J. Bernstein, M.D., Medical Director, Rejuvia Medspa
ZERONA is a new body-slimming procedure
designed to remove fat and contour the
body without invasive surgery. Unlike other
procedures, ZERONA allows the patient to
continue their daily activities without inter-
ruptions from surgery, pain, or wounds.
ZERONA works by utilizing the Erchonia®
LipoLASER (FDA market cleared for laser
assisted liposuction) to open a pore in the
wall of the fat cells, releasing the fat into
the interstitial space. The excess fat is
passed through the body during its normal
course of detoxification. Treatment takes
40 minutes and needs to be administered
three times a week for two weeks for best
results. The laser will be applied over the
targeted area i.e. waist, hips, and thighs for
20 minutes and then the patient will turn
over and do the same treatment on the
opposite side. Patients may choose to do a
second series of treatments.
During the procedure patients most often
do not feel anything. The laser that is being
administered is a low level laser that does
not produce heat. It is completely non-inva-
sive, and has never shown any recorded
side effects. Low Level Lasers have been in
use for over 40 years for treatment of
many different conditions such as chronic
pain, wound healing, and many other ortho-
pedic conditions.
ZeronaFacts
•Treatment takes approx. 40 min., three times a week for two weeks.
•The average patient loses anywhere from3.5 to 11 inches. Some patients have lost
even more.
•You are measured before and after treat-ments to verify loss of inches.
•No side effects or complications havebeen reported in relation to a ZERONA
treatment.
•It is a completely non-invasive, provenprocedure that requires no anesthesia.
In fact, some studies have even shown a
reduction in the body’s cholesterol levels
post treatment, thus improving the overall
well being of patients.
•You can continue your current weight lossand fitness regimen while undergoing your
short series of treatments. Unlike tradi-
tional surgical sculpting treatments such as
liposuction, the ZERONA laser system lets
you be as active as you like to maximize
your results.
•With just six 40-minute treatmentsneeded, you will see results after your 2
week visit.
•With no recovery from each treatmentyou are back to your daily tasks immediately.

ized cooling to reduce inflammation and
suction massage that promotes lymphatic
drainage and stimulates collagen growth.
Typically, a series of 16 treatments are
required to achieve the desired outcome,
although results differ in individuals depen-
ding on factors such as exercise, diet,
number of treatments and the severity of
the problem. TriActive can also be used as
a complementary treatment to SmartLipo
and ZERONA by helping with lymphatic
drainage and improving skin tone. Since
there really is no permanent “cure” for
reducing cellulite, monthly maintenance is
recommended following the initial series of
treatments. Patients don’t mind, since the
massage-like treatment is pleasurable.

performsSmartLipo
As more women and men want to look and
feel better about themselves, body contou-
ring and lipo-sculpture continue to grow in
popularity, making liposuction the most
popular cosmetic surgery performed today.
SmartLipo™ is the first and only laser-
assisted lipolysis system to offer a revolu-
tionary and minimally invasive procedure for
the removal of fat. Using a high-powered
laser, Smartlipo™ is a new Laser Body
Sculpting procedure with less downtime
and side effects than traditional liposuction.
The benefits of SmartLipo are greatly
reduced downtime, skin tightening, minimal
bleeding or bruising, and the risk of scar-
ring is minimal. It can be performed in the
neck and other sensitive regions where
traditional liposuction can be risky. A very
small cannula, or tube, approximately 1.0
mm to 2.0 mm in diameter containing a
laser fiber is inserted into the skin. The
cannula is moved back and forth to deliver
the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing
them to rupture and easily drain away. The
laser energy also interacts with the dermis,
resulting in collagen shrinkage. Due to the
cannula's small size, Smartlipo™ is a mini-
mally invasive procedure and can be
performed under local anesthesia. The
laser causes small blood vessels to coagu-
late immediately on contact, resulting in
less bleeding, swelling and bruising; it has a
quicker recovery time than conventional
liposuction. Because general anesthesia is
unnecessary, the procedure is very safe
with only minimal side effects. The ideal
candidates for SmartLipo are people who
want a subtle, natural improvement in
appearance without a long recovery time.
You are a candidate if you are in good
health and within 25 pounds of your ideal
weight and have areas of local body fat that
have not responded well to diet and exer-
cise. Recovery time from SmartLipo is mini-
mal. Light exercise is recommended as
early as the day after the procedure.
SmartLipo patients are typically back to
work within 1-2 days following the proce-
dure. Compression garments are used for
1-2 weeks after the procedure and full skin
tightening takes 4 to 6 months.

TriActiveLaserDermology

Excluding skin cancer, prostate cancer is
the most common malignancy diagnosed in
men in the United States. According to data
from the American Cancer Society, there
were 217,000 new cases diagnosed in
2010, and more than 32,000 patients died
from the disease in the United States alone.
The mortality of patients with prostate cancer
is only second to lung cancer amongst malig-
nant diseases in U.S. male patients.
As we have learned from screening
mammograms, pap smears, and colono-
scopies; making an early diagnosis, when
the cancer is still localized and the patients
are asymptomatic, is the most single effec-
tive measure to improve survival from
cancer. There has been significant improve-
ment in mortality rates from cancer in the
U.S. for the past 10 years, and those
advances are attributed mainly to effective
screening programs, and prevention efforts
like limiting unprotected sun exposure, and
smoking-cessation campaigns.
Unfortunately, current screening techniques
for the early detection of prostate cancer
are not as good as their counterparts for
breast and cervical cancer in women. The
systematic and routine use of determination
of Prostatic-Specific-Antigen (PSA) levels,
have not yield consistent results in decreas-
ing mortality from prostate cancer. The clini-
cal course of prostate cancer is very
unpredictable. Many patients will live a
normal life span without treatment,
whereas others will have a more aggressive
course with rapid progression and develop-
ment of metastasis and early mortality. The
biggest challenge we encounter in our daily
practice is to identify which patients require
early and aggressive treatments, and which
would be better off being observed alone.
The treatment of prostate cancer is complex
and can lead into significant toxicities, inclu-
ding urinary, rectal, and sexual dysfunction.
Determining who needs treatment, and
when treatment needs to be offered in the
course of the disease takes a team effort
that includes: the patient and his family,
primary care physician, urologist, medical
oncologist, and radiation oncologist. It is
very important that an active discussion
occurs between the patient and his health
care provider regarding pros and cons of
early detection of prostate cancer. Accor-
ding to the National Comprehensive Cancer
Network (NCCN) guidelines, screening with
a combination of PSA determination and
digital rectal exam (DRE) can start at age
40. If the rectal examination is normal, and
the PSA is less than 1 ng/dl, it is recom-
mended that next determination be done
after 5 years. If initial PSA is greater than
1 ng/dl, or patient has significant family
history, or in African American descen-
dants; a more frequent examination is
recommended.
Once the diagnosis of prostate cancer is
suspected, the patient is usually referred to
a Urologist, who will perform a transrectal
biopsy to establish a diagnosis. Many
patients with urinary symptoms and/or
increased PSA or abnormal DRE will have

androgen suppression or deprivation
results in clinical remission, eventually many
patients will have progressive disease and
will develop metastasis to the bones, or less
common, to other organs. Median survival
of patients with metastatic castrate-resis-
tant prostate cancer is usually between
18 months and 3 years, in clinical trials.
Those patients with progressive disease,
refractory to androgen manipulation, are
usually offered palliative therapies or
chemotherapy treatments. Historically,
chemotherapeutic regimens for prostate
cancer have not been very effective and
often result in prohibitive toxicities and
complications. Many patients will not
choose those therapies fearing those side
effects. Until recently, the most used
chemotherapeutic agent was Doxetacel,
which had shown in clinical trials to prolong
life by an average of 2-3 months, compared
to other agents. This drug is usually given in
combination with steroids as an intravenous
infusion every three weeks or on a weekly
basis. Although many patients benefit from
this treatment option, it implies frequent
office visits, and an increased risk for
complications, which can sometimes result
in decreased quality of life.
Over the past decade, there has been exten-
sive research in developing immunothera-
pies to treat cancer using the body’s own
immune cells (lymphocytes) to fight the
malignant cells. Immunotherapies or
vaccines, offer the theoretical advantage of
being less toxic than standard chemother-
apy, and since the patient’s own cells are
used, adverse reactions and rejections are
not commonly seen. Treatments are
cumbersome and costly, and many trials in
the past have failed to show a survival
advantage. Recently, the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) granted approval to
such a medication to treat patients with
metastatic, androgen-resistant, prostate
cancer. Provenge (Sipuleucel-T) is an autolo-
gous cellular immunotherapy that uses the
patient’s own mononuclear cells to stimu-
late the body’s immune system against
prostate cancer cells. In a published clinical
trial in The New England Journal of Medi-
cine, patients treated with provenge
survived and average of 4 to 5 months
longer than patients treated with placebo,
and safety profile was favorable, compared
with standard chemotherapy.
The patients and medical community are
excited about this recent development in
cancer therapy, and we believe these kinds
of medications are going to be used more
and more in the near future, and to treat
different malignancies, but we have to be
careful and not generalize results. As we
stand today, Provenge is only approved for
the treatment of patients that have
metastatic androgen-resistant prostate
cancer and that are asymptomatic or mini-
mally symptomatic. Patients with more
aggressive disease did not benefit from this
medication in clinical trials and should not
be offered this therapy. In my daily clinical
practice, I encourage patients and families
to be informed about all different treatment
options, and to always discuss any concerns
with the Medical Team. The treatment of
prostate cancer is very complex and involves
a multidisciplinary team approach. Our
common goal is to improve the survival and
quality of life of our patients, and I firmly
believe that we will continue to make signifi-
cant improvements in Cancer detection and
effective therapies in the years to come.
I am happy and proud to say that our
patients with prostate cancer and other
malignancies in this Community, have access
to all FDA-approved medications, including
immunotherapy, and that we have excellent

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), which is
a benign condition that doesn’t need to be
treated with anti-cancer therapy. If the biopsy
confirms the diagnosis of prostate cancer, a
careful analysis of the tissue by the Patholo-
gist will determine the Gleason Score. Diffe-
rent imaging studies (Ultrasound, CT scans,
PET scans, Bone scans, MRIs) will be per-
formed to determine if the tumor is localized
to the gland, or if spread has occurred to
local or distant organs. Metastasis to the
bone is by far the most common pattern of
spread of prostate cancer. Most patients will
be diagnosed with localized disease and a
decision of observation, versus local treat-
ment needs to be made by the patient and his
Health Care team. At this time the Primary
Care Provider and the Urologist are already
involved, and this is likely the time to go and
see a Medical Oncologist and a Radiation
Oncologist to discuss different treatment
approaches and to carefully review the pros
and cons of immediate versus delayed treat-
ment. Second opinions with other providers
are encouraged when the situation is not
clear. For most patients, a treatment decision
doesn’t have to be made right away, and there
is usually plenty of time to explore options and
consider several medical opinions. Treatment
of localized prostate cancer includes Urologi-
cal Surgery to remove the organ (radical
prostatectomy), and/or Radiation Therapy.
Radiation Therapy can be delivered by exter-
nal beam, or by intracavitary techniques (radi-
ation beams). Sometimes, a combination of
Surgery and Radiation is needed. Newer radi-
ation modalities, like CyberKnife are increas-
ingly being used to deliver higher doses of
treatment to the tumor while sparing the
normal surrounding tissues.
About 30% of patients treated with local ther-
apies will progress after 10 years. Progres-
sion is usually manifested by elevation in the
PSA level. Those patients are generally
treated by the Urologist and the Medical
Oncologist with medications to suppress
androgen production; or sometimes with
surgical removal of the testicles (to try to
eliminate androgen production). Although

forTreatingSkinCancers
Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of
abnormal skin cells. If left unchecked,
these cancer cells can spread from the
skin into other tissues and organs. Skin
cancer is divided into two major groups:
non-melanoma and melanoma. Basal cell
carcinoma is a type of non-melanoma skin
cancer, and is the most common form of
cancer in the United States. According to
the American Cancer Society, 75% of all
skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas.
Known risk factors for skin cancer include
the following: Complexion, genetics, age,
sun exposure and sunburn. Most skin
cancers occur on areas of the skin that
are regularly exposed to sunlight or other
ultraviolet radiation. This is considered
the primary cause of all skin cancers.
Skin cancer can develop in anyone, not
only people with these risk factors. Also
young, healthy people -- even those with
dark skin, hair, and eyes -- can develop
skin cancer.
Symptoms
Skin cancers may have many different
appearances. They can be small, shiny,
waxy, scaly and rough, firm and red,
crusty or bleeding, or have other
features. Therefore, anything suspicious
should be looked at by a physician. See
the articles on specific skin cancers for
more information. Here are some fea-
tures to look for: Asymmetry, borders,
color, diameter and any skin growth that
bleed or will not heal.
Treatment
Different types of skin cancer require
different treatment approaches. Surgical
removal of skin cancer is very common.
However, in very delicate or sensitive
areas, such as on the face, nose, lips and
ears a non-surgical approach should be
considered before a potentially disfigur-
ing surgery. One such approach, which is
relatively painless, is radiation therapy.
Recent advances in radiation applicators
have afforded patients equal efficacy to
surgery without any cosmetic defects.
HDR applicators can be custom designed
to treat such difficult areas such as nasal
folds, eyelids and lips. This is referred to
as brachytherapy (HDR) since the treat-
ment distance is very short from source
to target and can be customized for size
of the skin lesion and depth. Treatment
begins with simulation on a CAT scan,
which precisely records size and depth of
the skin lesion. Next follows a computer-
optimized treatment plan that customizes
the treatment for each patient and loca-
tion. Treatment time is 1-2 minutes and
a total of 8-12 daily treatments are
usually required over a period of approxi-
mately 2 weeks given Monday-Friday. As
opposed to surgery, there is no cutting,
and therefore no risk of bleeding or infec-
tion. The risk of a poor cosmetic
outcome is significantly less than with
surgery.

Outcomes
When selecting a treatment option for
skin cancer it is also very important to
consider the cure rates with each option.
The recent advances in this type of radia-
tion (HDR) have now allowed patients to
choose this option with equal certainty to
surgery that their cancer will not return.
The rate of small basal cell skin cancer
returning is about 1 - 5% with both Mohs
surgery and this type of radiation (HDR),
and up to 10% for other forms of treat-
ment. Smaller basal cell carcinomas are
less likely to come back than larger ones.
Basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads to
other parts of the body. Most (95%) of
squamous cell tumors can be cured if
they are removed or treated with radia-
tion promptly. The outlook depends on a
number of factors, including the type of
cancer and how quickly it was diagnosed.
Squamous cell carcinoma only rarely
spreads to other parts of the body. The
use of a non-surgical approach should be
a consideration for all patients with non-
melanoma skin cancers. New advances
in radiotherapy can afford equal cure
rates to surgery while preserving as
much normal tissue as possible.

Summer camps are a wonderful option for
parents looking for ways to keep their kids
busy while having fun. They can offer great
opportunities for your child to socialize,
learn new skills, expand their horizons,
grow as individuals, and, of course, make
new friends. The more you know about
camps, the better you'll be at picking the
right one for your kids. Read on for some
tips to help you select the perfect camp.
Based on the activities, there are so many
different kinds of camps: Traditional camps.
Academic camps, Adventure camps,
Performing Arts camps, Religious camps,
Sports camps, Special needs camps.
Most of these camps are day camps –
that is, camps that your child attends
during the day and is home by dinner, tend
to run for a short duration and usually offer
your child the opportunity to explore differ-
ent interests. The advantage, if your child
doesn’t like the camp for whatever reason
you know the camp will end soon. There
are also overnight camps that become
suitable for children as they reach 9 right
up to teenagers. You are the best judge of
whether your child will be able to adapt to
an overnight camp. It offers the opportunity
to pick up really valuable social and life
skills and chances to take on new responsi-
bilities.
ChoosingtheRightCampEvery camp is unique in its own way and
the choices out there can be overwhel-
ming for families. As a parent, you know
your child best – their hobbies, interests
and comfort level with trying new things.
The National Camp Association (NCA)
suggests you start by answering some
specific questions in your quest to finding
the right camp:
1.Whatdoyouandyourchildwantto
gainfromthecampexperience? Consider
the primary goal, which can range from
learning new skills or becoming proficient in a
particular subject to developing more self-
confidence and exerting more independence.
2.Whatareotherexpectationsofthe
campexperience? Determine whether
your child is old enough to try an overnight
camp, or if a day camp is more appropriate
right now. Other small, but possibly impor-
tant details: Does the camp have a pool or
a lake (or both)? For overnight camps, are
the campers sleeping in cabins or dorm-
like buildings? Do day campers take field
trips or stay onsite?
3.Whatarethespecialintereststhat
yourchildwantstoexplore? Remember,
there are many choices. Make sure your
child gets to try new things!
4.Doesyourchildhaveanyphysical,inte-
llectual,orsociallimitations? If there's a

5.Whatkindofemphasiswillyourchild
profitfromthemost? Think about how
the camp structures the day, what its
professed values are, and whether you'd
prefer a coed camp or not.
Parents also need to keep in mind that the
summer camp experience is about their
child – and not them. It’s important you
don’t force your child to attend a camp
that really interests you. You may love art,
but your kid may have no interest in beco-
ming an artist. Moreover, if your child isn’t
very athletic, don’t subject them to a week
of sport camp just because you’d like him
or her to become more active. Chances
are they’ll have a miserable experience and
may resist trying camps in the future. By
being mindful of your child’s interests and
limitations, you have better odds of your
child having a fun and memorable camp
experience. Also, consider selecting a
camp with varied activities, with other acti-
vities available, they have the option of
trying something else. The key to choosing
the right camp lies in knowing your child’s
interests, preferences and personality and
opting for camps that offer a wide range of
experiences.

every year 4 men are reported being bitten
by sharks, while between 70 and 100
million sharks are killed each year just to
pull out their fins. This practice is known
as Flapping or Finning. The fin has a high
commercial value in Asian countries where
it is used for the production of soup, for
which they pay up to 200 dollars per plate.
Shark Finning is the act of cutting off the
fins of a shark at sea, and then discarding
the rest of the shark by throwing it back
into the water. It is not considered Finning
the disembarking of the shark on land and
then cutting off the fins. Why do I empha-
size this difference? Because Finning
allows fishermen to catch a lot more
sharks! For fisherman, Finning is the
perfect solution. Not only they save space
in their refrigerators but at the same time
they keep the valuable part of the shark, but
the fact that they don’t utilize space for
shark carcasses means they can continue
to capture sharks endlessly.
Finning Worldwide has a 90% decline in
shark populations and has increased over
the last decade for several reasons, inclu-
ding the insatiable demand for shark fin
soup for a growing middle class in Asia that
can now have access to the soup, a dish
once reserved for royalty. For all the myths
of their properties, in addition to traditional
treatments, are now increasingly found in
other products like energy drinks, pet food,
makeup, vitamins and homeopathic medi-
cines. Let us not forget the fishing
enhanced technology.
Talking with my friend, Marine Biologist and
conservationist Ramon Llaneza about the
consequences of the disappearance of
shark, he commented that the figures esti-
mated by the University of Hawaii were 200
million sharks a year (500.000 per day).
“This is a dramatic figure of over exploita-
tion of sharks and a way of damaging and
altering one of the largest and most impor-
tant ecosystems on the planet that can
never be repaired. Unfortunately sharks are
highly vulnerable to exploitation and require
many decades to recover, since they are the
least productive of all species of marine fish.
Compared with other fish sharks grow
slowly, reach sexual maturity late, and have
a long life span, long gestation periods and
generally low reproductive rates”.
If we do not act NOW, the oceans will die
within a few decades and with them, 70%
of the planet's oxygen-producing oceans.
The consequences are unpredictable and
tragic for future generations. And we have
to understand that any changes in nature
trigger collateral changes that affect all
species. Sharks are top predators in the
marine ecosystem and therefore have a key

role in maintaining the trophic balance and
the promotion of biodiversity. Their disap-
pearance may cause a lot of negative ecologi-
cal impacts on the structure and function of
marine communities and ecosystems.
It is essential that all governments work
together to ensure that Finning is removed
from fishing practices, the individual efforts
of the countries are virtually useless since
sharks are animals that migrate constantly.
The goal is to achieve legislation at a global
level, so we must put pressure so that
Finning is included on the discussion agenda
of the United Nations. Because there is
convergence of ideas between the fishing
industry and economies, the Asians who
need to change an ancient culture and the
conservationists, have adopted some laws
to regulate Finning, especially in countries
like Chile and Costa Rica, where the
numbers of exports to
Asia are alarming. If this bill passes into
law, shark Finning will be banned, disem-
barking of the animals with their fins
completely attached to their bodies will be
forced and the presence of fins on board
the vessel shall be prohibited as well as
the transport or transfer of shark fins
from a vessel to another.
It's just a start, but in my opinion, they
should classify the species that are near
extinction to declare them ban
until their numbers are stabilized. For
Ramon LLanezca is an environmental prob-
lem with an economic solution. He says:
“We must see the problem as a classic
economic situation of supply and demand.
As long as there is pressure from demand,
prices will go up and more appealing the
“business” and the black markets will
emerge. Solution, eliminate the demand,
vetoing consumption of shark fin soup in
Chinese restaurants. Check out the restau-
rant list compiled by the Animal Welfare
Institute. (www.awionline.org ) and in the
restaurants of your city, say no to the
consumption of shark fin soup.
Good persuasive campaign to raise aware-
ness would be ideal for all communities in
the decision to say "No" to the consumption
of soup and products containing shark fins
that will help to preserve the life of the
number one in the ocean food chain and
therefore life on our Planet. The industry
must understand that the first one to be
harmed if the ecosystem collapses is the
same fishing industry.
