What we already know...• Speciation is when a new species are created after some evolutionary event.
• Speciation has
caused the diversity of organisms that currently exists.
• Scientists have identified more than 2 Billion Species of organisms on Earth, but estimate only 40 million species habit Earth.
• To help establish which species are most related, scientists have created a system of taxonomy.
Modern System of Taxonomy
Assigns every organism into a • Kingdom• Phylum• Class• Order• Family• Genus• species
Least Specific
Most Specific
• Kingdom = all living organisms fall into one of 6 kingdoms
• Phylum = made up of several different classes that share a few characteristics
• Class = related orders that have some common traits
• Order = grouping of several families of similar organisms
• Family = genera that share similarities
• Genus = a group of closely related organisms
• Species = smallest group of classification system in which populations share similar characteristics and can interbred
Modern System of Taxonomy
6 Kingdom ClassificationAll organisms belong to one of 6
kingdoms based on their characteristics.
• Eubacteria• Archaebacteria• Protista• Fungi• Plantae• Animalia
Archaebacteria• Means ancient bacteria. They are unicellular prokaryotes that usually live in very extreme environments.
Protista• The “Leftovers” which include things that don’t fit anywhere else. • Some are unicellular or multicellular eukaryotes.

Fungi• Eukaryotes who absorb their food after it has been digested by enzymes. They often act as decomposers or parasites in nature.
Plantae• Multicelluar
eukaryotes that rely on the sun as their
source of food. They range from flowering plants, mosses, ferns and conebearing
plants.
Animalia
• Multicellular eukaryotes that seek their own food. They range from fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.
• Some species have very similar common names.• Some species have many common names.
Scientific names help scientists to communicate
1. What are the 7 levels of taxonomy, from least to most
specific?
Spider Monkey: Ateles geoffroyi
Killer Whale: Orcinus orca
2. Identify the Genus and Species name for the following animals:
