What Time Is It?
• If you had no watch/device, how could you tell what time it is?
• 24 hours in a day• 12:00 pm when then sun is at its highest?• Not the same everywhere…..
• How was this issue solved?
• Time Zones
Physical Distance
• measured distance between two points
• in km (metric system or SI units)
• in mi (imperial system)
Time Distance
• time it takes to get from point A to B
• this was and is continually shrinking – for transportation– for communication
• Up until the mid 1800’s, there were no time zones
Intercolonial Railroad
• Speed of travel increasing• Time to cover distance decreasing• Multiple different times in different cities• Tough to create schedules that work
• 1879 Sir Sandford Fleming (surveyor/engineer)• 24 hour system of time zones for the world. • One for every 15 degrees of longitude• Officially adopted in 1884
Time Zones
• Time zones begin at 0º longitude (Greenwich, England)• Prime Meridian• Each time zone to the east (+1 hour)• Each time zone to the west (-1 hour)
• 12 hours ahead and 12 hours behind (180º E or W)• International Date Line
World Time Zones
• Why aren’t they every 15º of longitude?
Time Zone Map
• Label your map “Canadian Time Zones”• Accurately draw the 6 times zones in Canada (pg 23)• Label them appropriately and lightly shade them
• Include the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) for each. Ex. Atlantic Standard time is UTC - 4:00
• Answer Questions 2 and 3a,b,c on pg 23 in the text• Write 2 time zone questions for a friend to answer.
