Social Media Mapped Out

● The human social impulse and media

● As little technical information as possible

● Skype, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter,

Instagram, Pinterest

● Blogs, podcasts and YouTube

● Reasons to play with social media - what

might it add to your life?

We humans are social

We love to communicate

Using any medium, words on paper

transmitted voice,

even silent listening.

But only the face-to-face discussions

about broadcasts are actually social

Technology developed and computers had

arrived by the 1950s

Networking, linking computers

The American Department of Defence

-> created ARPANET

-> to connect large research

computers

(-> ironically the most secretive

institution created the most open

communication technology ever!)

History of the Internet -

The Rise of Social“Since the mid-1990s, the Internet has had a revolutionary

impact on culture and commerce, including the rise of near-

instant communication by electronic mail, instant

messaging, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone

calls, two-way interactive video calls, and the World Wide

Web with its discussion forums, blogs, social networking,

and online shopping sites.”

Lurking!

“In Internet culture, a lurker is typically a member of an

online community who observes, but does not actively

participate.[1][2] The exact definition depends on context.

Lurkers make up a large proportion of all users in online

communities.[3] Lurking allows users to learn the

conventions of an online community before they actively

participate, improving their socialization when they

eventually de-lurk.[4]”

Why Use LinkedIn?

LinkedIn there is really nothing to hide. You only get one

tiny picture of yourself and a limited space to tell the world

about your interests. Above all, there is no wall on your

or write nasties on your wall. This could be part of the

appeal of LinkedIn for anyone who is not Generation Y.”

Why Social Media is Important

● It increasingly influences, shapes, and

makes the news

● It is widely used and influences people’s

behavior

● It is causing profound changes in society

(just as the printing press did)

● What you can’t avoid, you should know

about! and ...

We need to be involved with social media to

influence it in positive directions, to bring

balance to the less salubrious areas and

aspects, plus

Social media can add pleasure and fun to your

lives, and

can help you stay in touch with family & friends.
