What’s News ― January 2020
L'Arche Hobart Beni-Abbes Community
Hello everyone,
Wow, how fast has this year flown! Is it a measure of how
busy our lives are that we reach Christmas thinking the year
has just disappeared? Although we have the same amount
of time in each year, why do we think it goes so fast? I
have been reflecting on this, and for me, being busy can
overshadow moments of deep reflection and thanks and
gratitude for my life and everything and everyone in it. I’m
not leaving this until a New years’ resolution to say that
I need to spend an extra few moments each day in quiet
reflection.
We have done so much together in 2019, and what
fantastic community events we have shared!
Everything from playing dress ups!, dancing, singing (some
have the voices of angels, while me, well yes, I need to mime
more!!), times of stillness and reflection and deep grief for
our loved ones that we have lost.
Strategically and operationally we have achieved a lot and
this is made more seamless with the skills and commitment
of both our Board of Management and all employees who are
committed to L’Arche philosophy and mission.
On that point, I take this opportunity to thank you all for how
you have contributed and participated in our community,
whether that be in paid roles or volunteer roles. Many thanks
to our core members who teach us much, and offer the gift of
friendship and unconditional acceptance of all of us.
May you have a safe and very happy Christmas and many
blessings to you and your family for 2020.
Best regards
Mary Langdon
Community Leader (CL) / CEO

L’Arche Hobart (Beni-Abbes)
Mission Statement (in conjunction with the
International Identity and Mission Statement)
At Beni-Abbes we are people with and without
disability who create homes and community.
We share our lives in real friendships, as we
cook, share meals, pray together, talk, listen,
help each other, through the good and the hard times in the
spirit of love, as a sign of hope to others.
God is revealed to us when we celebrate and
gather to pray and through relationships
that are built on faithful, open and welcoming
hearts.

Prayer Points …
For our brothers and sisters across Australia who have been affected by the horrific bush fires. Help us all to be generous in our responses to their particular needs.
For each of us as we enter the gate of this New Year – may we be filled with energy, joy and confidence in the knowledge that we can each make a huge difference in our world, through our small and big acts of kindness and compassion.
For our L’Arche Community here in Hobart – that 2020 might see us deepen our under-standing and commitment to the wellbeing of each other. May we be a light to the world through the ways we show our love towards each other.
Help us to remember – to pray and give thanks for – all our L’Arche Communities around the world and especially those who may be struggling at this time.
We give thanks for the friendship and support of Fr Mark Hanns and keep him in our prayers as he takes up his new role.
We give thanks for all the blessings of this Christmas season – our celebrations, meals and gifts we may have received. May we hold onto this joy and thankfulness as we settle back into our normal rhythms of work and recreation.
Dear L’Arche friends,
I’ve just made a discovery. When I have a weekend in which to put together an edition of What’s News, it takes me two days. But when I have ten days, you guessed it, it takes me ten days! I seem to have been sabotaged by something called “holiday mode”.
Never mind. This edition is mainly looking at Christmas in our community. I didn’t expect people to do reports in the middle of Christmas / New Year preparations but a few hardy souls kindly rose to the occasion. Thank you. Above and beyond the call of duty!
In case you’ve ever wondered who takes the photos for What’s News, most are taken by assistants at the houses and by me. House assistants take photos to use for members’ Remembering Celebrating Dreaming books and presentations and many of those photos find their way into the newsletter. Thank you! I would also like to acknowledge the terrific photos of the Christmas BBQ and play which were taken by our friend “Apricot Sue” (as she is known at Garry’s house). Thank you to Sue and to all who contribute to the newsletter.
On a sad note, our good friend Fr Mark Hanns, parish priest at St Therese’s Moonah, is moving to Melbourne where he will be running the formation program for men preparing to become priests in the order of Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC). We wish him well in this new challenge, and will miss his kindness and cheerful presence, particularly around the Louis & Zelie Centre where we share office space. We look forward to getting to know his successor.
With best wishes,
Claire Manthorpe

STOP PRESS: At the end of November Peter Ramsden had a huge garage sale at his place. The first lot of buyers arrived at 7:30 am despite the garage sale not starting until 8:00am. It was a successful and busy Saturday morning.

From Tim, Rosey, Katherine and Sean’s house
The community Christmas barbecue and play went well and it was really good to see old friends again and meet new people. The households’ Christmas dinner also went well and everyone was happy with their Kris Kringle present.
Rosey is looking forward to spending time with family, especially her Dad, at Christmas. She has been taking her exercise program seriously and is rightly proud of her achievements so far.
Tim celebrated his birthday dinner in December. His sister Julie and friends
Peter Ryan and Jane McKeown also joined the party. Tim also visited his friend Felicity and received a gift from her. Thank you Felicity for your faithfulness! Some of our friends gathered for “cake and candle” for Rosey and Tim. (Rosey’s birthday featured in the last What’s News.) In a L’Arche tradition, a candle is passed around and everyone has an opportunity to wish the birthday person their best wishes.
Sean attended the Possability Christmas Party at the Hockey Centre as well as the
Speakout Christmas dinner at the Maypole Hotel and, finally, the Oakdale Christmas party. So many celebrations! He looks forward to a trip to Sydney with his sister Jane and also going to the Big Bash in January. Sean and Rosey also went to the Carols on the Hill with Jane.
Katherine really enjoyed visiting Andrew Stanton’s family especially this holiday season. She spent Christmas day with her brother Arnold and family and had a great day. She also enjoyed watching the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race.
