You will produce a piece of writing telling the story of you as Enrique - how you managed to cross the border (or not!!)

use the past tense first person viewpoint (ie. “I”) opening paragraph: describe your situation, your feelings

and your plans 2nd paragraph: the start of your journey, perhaps

mentioning the push factors 3rd paragraph: your journey over the border, still

mentioning push but also pull factors 4th paragraph talk about job decision, what you will take with

justifications use adjectives to project the mood and describe your

feelings

In groups of 3.Teacher reads ‘The Story of Pedro Morales’.

Students close your eyes and imagine the scene.

Pedro Morales is 20 years and has decided to migrate to California in search of a well paid job.

Your decisions will be:a) What to take with youb) How you will enter the USAc) What job you will take

How will you cross from Mexico to California?Option ASwim across the Rio Grande 1:10 chance of getting caught.

Option BCut the wires on the fence and crawl under. 1:3 chance of getting caught.

If you are caught by the immigration officials you can bribe them with $20 and they will let you through.

Option A: Cattle Hand $5 a day. Work is hard and long. Need a work permit ($20) – can buy after started working. Summers are hot, dry and dusty, 28 degrees and no rain in the summer.

Option C: Factory worker Ford factory close to border with Mexico. $20 a day. Working conditions are good. Work inside outside of sun. Need a work permit.

Option B: Fruit and Cotton FarmPicking fruit and cotton.Hard work and long days.$2.50 a day.No work permit needed.Summer very hot (30 degrees), rain in summer months.

Option D: Bar WorkWorking on tables and behind the bar.Work is tiring and long hours.$2 a day but get tips.No work permit needed.

You can take as many items as you wish but remember they must be practical and you must give a reason for why you are taking them.

E.g. Matches to light a fire as he needs to keep warm because he might have to survive outside in a desert where it gets cold at night and he would need a fire to cook on if he were outside.
