    About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous

system (CNS: the brain and spinal cord) that most commonly

affects young adults. Sclerosis means hardening; multiple

sclerosis means that there are multiple area of hardened tissue

in the brain and spinal cord due to scarring. Get more detail on

    our blog site .

    Drug Therapy in MS

In the treatment of MS, medication is only a part of the management with many supportive

measures that are equally important. The management of MS falls into three broad categories

Drugs to treat attacks (immediate treatment for a relapse):

l Corticosteroids are mainly used to reduce the inflammation during a relapse.3 Not all relapses

require hospitalisation. Some may be treated with oral corticosteroid therapy while more

severe attacks may need injectable corticosteroids.

l Plasma exchange (plasmapheresis) is a procedure that removes some blood from your body

and mechanically separates your blood cells from your plasma. The blood cells are then mixed

with a replacement solution and return the blood to the body. Plasma exchange in rare

situations may be used to help combat severe symptoms of multiple sclerosis relapses in

people who arent responding to intravenous steroids.4,5

Starting treatment early and staying on treatment can make a real difference in managing your

MS symptoms and slowing the progression of your disease. In fact, many MS treatments have

been shown to reduce the risk of having a relapse and slow the progression of disability. MS

    therapy has several goals:

l Reducing the number of relapses

    l Slowing down disability progression

l Reducing the number of brain lesions

l Reducing the rate of brain shrinkage

There are numerous therapy options available to you in India which may help you manage MS

    more effectively:
