While that’s not a surprise given the rise in new technology for the automotive sec-tor, what some homeown-ers may find surprising is the level of technology with items in the garage next to the car - like the lawn equipment. Here are three unique ways today’s lawn equipment is featuring automotive-like technology.

Bluetooth Connectiv-ity

While Bluetooth tech-nology has become more of a standard on new cars, it is actu-ally a unique feature on lawn equipment. With the Cub Connect mobile app, owners can con-nect their smartphone with certain lawn mow-ers, garden tractors and zero turn riders via Bluetooth. It takes the guesswork out of main-tenance by allowing the lawn tractor to alert its owner about needed oil changes, blade mainte-nance, air filter replace-ments and other routine maintenance.

“With so many apps available for things homeowners don’t use, this app can actually help them keep track of maintenance for an im-portant piece of e q u i p -m e n t , ” s a y s J a s o n C a m e r-on, home e x p e r t and TV host.

E l e c -t r o n i c Fuel-In-jected Engines

Electronic Fuel-Inject-ed Engines - or EFI en-gines - were popularized in the automotive sec-tor in 1980s. However, no one had been able to engineer the same type of technology in residen-tial lawn tractors until this year. For the first time ever, fuel-injected engines are now avail-able on XT2 LX42 Cub Cadet lawn tractors. The new engine technology reduces emissions and delivers excellent fuel consumption - using up to 25 percent less fuel than carbureted engines that are standard on oth-er lawn tractors.

“According to a recent study, lower fuel con-sumption is a top benefit to residential lawn mow-er customers,” Cameron says. “And they have a willingness to pay for fu-el-injection technology - more than half surveyed

were likely to purchase a riding mower with a fuel-injected engine.”

Another advantage of the engine technology is that riding mowers with these engines feature a one-step start, making it easier to start in all weather conditions. The push-button start mir-rors the features in many cars.

Zero Emissions

Hybrid and electric cars have carved a place in the automotive world, but there is now an equiv-alent to that eco-friendly technology for lawn care. The RZT-S Zero is the world’s only electric ze-ro-turn rider with steer-ing wheel control and four-wheel steering. It requires zero gasoline, zero oil, zero oil filters and provides zero emis-sions and zero engine noise, making it one of the most environmental-ly friendly lawn mowers on the market today. It operates on battery pow-er, which provides up to 60 minutes of continuous mowing on an overnight charge.

For handheld lawn equipment, there’s a new technology available that also provides zero emis-sions. Cub Cadet powered by CORE uses a sophisti-

cated motor technology to deliver more torque with longer runtimes and no gasoline. It’s the same type of technology used in wind turbines and even submarines. In addition to providing zero emis-sions, it offers reduced noise and high torque levels equal to two-cycle engines most common in garages. Dear Car Talk:How do I complete-

ly take out the third row of seats in my 2002 Acura MDX? I need to deep-clean under it, thanks to the kids. -- Ashley

The third row in that car is a bench seat, and it’s held in place with bolts that go into the floor. I

can’t re-member if there are four or six of them.

If you open the rear liftgate and follow the seat posts down to the floor, you’ll find that there’s a flap in the carpeting. If you fold it back, you’ll find bolts. The bolts come out, and then that bench can be lift-ed up and removed. But it’s pretty heavy.

My suggestion would be: Next time you take your car in for any kind of ser-vice, ask your me-chanic to remove the third row of seats for you. It’ll be easy for him to do in the shop. And he can get anoth-er guy to help him lift it out.

Then have him put it aside while you take the car home, or to a local napalm fac-tory, and steam-clean whatever disgusting bodily products your kids deposited in the carpet.

When you’re done, drive back to the shop, and have him put the seat back in for you. He’ll charge you a few bucks. Or if you’re a good customer -- and you come back for your seat in less than a year -- he might even do it for nothing. In which case, brownies would be the appro-priate payment. Just make sure the kids don’t grind them into the carpet on the way back to the shop, Ash-ley.

(BPT) - There was a time when you were considered a “respon-sible” vehicle owner if you changed the oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles and had your tires rotated every other oil change. It turns out that while it is good practice to maintain your vehicle on a schedule, breaking out of that traditional oil change mind set and utilizing premium syn-thetic oil can ultimately save you time and mon-ey.

What makes synthetic oil different from con-ventional oil? There are two components that de-termine how well motor oil will perform in your car. One factor is the base oil and the second is the combination of chemicals (additives) that are added to the base oil.

Mineral or conven-tional oils are by-prod-ucts of refined crude oil. Refining helps reduce the impurities in the oil, but its end product has molecules that vary in size. This inconsis-tency in size can result in restricted flow when working its way through the engine. Synthetic oil molecules are manu-factured and are all the same size and shape. This creates less fric-tion in the engine and allows the oil to move throughout the engine smoothly resulting in better performance.

Additives added to the base oil are what give the oil the characteris-tics needed to do its job. Although additives are typically only 15 to 25 percent of the make-up of motor oil, they can impact a lubricant’s per-formance much more than the base oil. For example, mineral-based motor oil with a very good additive package can easily outperform synthetic motor oil with a mediocre addi-tive package. There is no easy way for a con-sumer to determine the quality of motor oil’s additive package. Price is often an indicator of quality since the more advanced additive tech-

nologies cost more to produce. Performance is the ultimate measure of additive package quality.

There have also been advancements in ad-ditive technologies that allow synthetic oil manufacturers to offer consumers a product that will allow them to go more miles between oil changes. By going 10,000-12,000 miles in-stead of three, depend-ing on your driving habits, you could be changing your oil once a year instead of four times! This benefit of us-ing synthetic saves the owner time and money, and reduces the impact on the environment with less oil waste that has to be disposed of.

So you decide to switch to synthetic oil, but even then not all synthetics are alike. For example premium synthetic lu-bricant manufacturer Royal Purple offers three different types of synthetic oils to meet a variety of consumer needs.

• Warranty compliance - This API licensed mo-tor oil is for consumers who have newer vehicles and are concerned about warranty compliance in both gasoline and diesel engines.

• High mileage - HMX is high mileage motor oil especially formulated with zinc and phosphorus and Royal Purple’s pro-prietary additive tech-nology Synerlec in ve-hicles with 75,000 miles or more.

Dear Tom and Ray:Is it possible for a

2013 Chevy Impala that has only 7,550 miles on it to mal-function mechanical-ly without operator error? When I got the car back after loan-ing it out, here’s what

I found: (1) Check engine light comes on. (2) Vehicle is slightly

jerking. (3) Check oil light comes on. (4) Check windshield washer fluid light comes on. (5) Oil, washer fluid and one other mystery fluid (for now) are all leak-ing. I asked if they ran over something or hit a bump in the road, and they say they did not. I think they did. So, is it pos-sible that the vehicle could have all those lights on and be leak-ing fluids with only 7,550 miles without some kind of opera-tor error?

RAY: No. Whoever you lent the car to ran over a buffalo. Or maybe a bronto-saurus.

TOM: You don’t say who had the car, JamieLee. My experience suggests it probably was a brother!

RAY: That would be my guess. In any case, at 7,550 miles, nothing should be leaking on this car, and none of the warn-ing lights should be coming on.

TOM: So I’d suggest that you have the car towed to the dealer as soon as possible. You really shouldn’t even drive it there if the oil light is on.

RAY: My guess is that the service man-ager will come find you in the waiting room and say, “What the heck did you run over?”

TOM: And if you get confirmation from the dealer that there was an impact of some kind on the underside of the car, then you can call your insurance company and report that the car was in an accident. Which it was.

RAY: If you lend your car to some-body, your insurance policy still covers the car. And then you, personally, can nego-tiate with the knuck-lehead who borrowed your car about pay-ing the deductible for you.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention as they drive past work zones. Not all work zones look alike. We remind motorists that work zones can be moving. operations, such as strip-ing, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.

The top five contributing circum-stances for work zone crashes in 2014 were following too closely, inattention, improper lane use or changing lanes, failed to yield, and driving too fast for conditions -- in that order. The average text takes five seconds to read. Traveling at 55 mph, you will travel more than the length of a football field- blind-folded! MoDOT’s slow moving maintenance operations move as slow as 10 mph and if you aren’t paying attention to the road, you will come up on the closed lane very quickly.

Any time highway workers are present on a Missouri roadway – whether it’s a long term lane closure, a moving operation, or shoulder work – your safety and the safety of those workers de-pends on drivers’ focus and at-tention. The state Slow Down and Move Over law includes MoDOT vehicles parked with amber/white lights flashing. Motorists are re-quired to slow down and change lanes when approaching MoDOT vehicles or law enforcement and emergency vehicles with lights flashing. The law is simple: If you see flashing lights on the side of the road, move over to give work-ers and emergency personnel plenty of room to stay safe.
