From the Roman Empire to the XIX

Century •The Roman Empire was interested in Poland for its reserve of amber.

•In the Middle Ages a big trade started between Italian and Polish merchants.

• In the Renaissance the famous Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus studied in Italy

• In 1848 a lot of Polish soldiers fought in the Savoy army during the First War of Independence. They also defended the Roman Republic and joined the Expedition of the Thousand, in the name of a common freedom.

During the I World War: •During the WW I it was decided to re-create Poland as a buffer state between Germany and the Soviet Union.

•After the War Poland became an independent state.

•The relationship between Italy and Poland favoured commercial trading .

•During the WW II Poland was divided between Germany and the Soviet Union.

•Although Italy joined the Axis, the relationship between Italy and Poland was not totally compromised.

•After the Second World War Italy and Poland reached an economic agreement.

1970-80-90s• 1978 Karol Józef Wojtyła became Pope with the

name of Giovanni Paolo II

• 1989: with the fall of Berlin Wall great changes occurred in Poland: the communist regime was abolished, and democracy was restored.

• 1990 the cooperation between Italy and Poland brought economic advantages to both countries.

• 2004 Poland joined the European Union.
