VRV or multpile units?In a larger home or commercial building when renewing or installing a

new system, it should be considered if a multiple systems or a VRV

system is utilised. To properly evaluate a VRV ( or VRF) system it

should well understood how they differ from a standard units These

differences and features include;

VRV systems are divided into 1) Heat pump and 2) Heat recovery

types of systems

Heat recovery systems include extra refrigeration pipework to allow

energy to be moved from one indoor unit to another indoor when

one is cooling and the other heating, while then rejecting or

absorbing excess energy outside the building

Heat pump can only absorb or reject energy moving it from inside

or outside the building.

A VRV ( variable refrigernat volume) system has multiple indoor

units connected to a single or common bank of outdoor units. The

advantage of this system is that the total system refrigernat flow is

modulated to only what is required. A further advantage is that the

amount of plant outside of the building is reduced . ie 4 standard

ducted split systems would have 4 outdoor untis outside where as a

VRV system could have 4 indoor units and just 1 outdoor unit.

The advantages of multiple units include;

Lower cost up until 5 or 6 units are on site

If a system fails it is only one area and not the whole site

Replacement of the system in 10 years time can be done in a

staggered fashion

The disadvantages of multiple units include;

A larger amount of outdoor real estate is required which is ok if a

flat roof area is easily used but otherwise a number of area’s will be

affected

Energy inefficiency compared to VRV/VRF technology

The Advantages of a VRV/VRF Systeminclude;

Higher levels of efficiency are able to be acheived

Less area is used to reject / absorb heat from outside the building.

If external plant area is limited or a condenser water system is used

VRV / VRF may be the only solution

These systems are able to have distances over 30 metres between

indoor and outdoor units whereas single units are restricted

The disadvantages of VRV / VRF;

Initial Cost of installation is higher

A system wide failure can disrupt the whole system. These systems

are reliable and engineered to a high standard

In summary the VRV / VRF is a more efficient, higher quality system

but is more expensive to install upfront. It can be the only choise when

a large distance exists between the indoor and out units or when the

available real estate will not accomodate 5 units taking up 25sqm

rather than 6 sqm. Given the technical variables it is best to speak to
