What is the Difference between Modern Art and Contemporary
Art?
Modern and contemporary, although the two words depict the same
meaning but when it comes
to modern and contemporary art, both are quite different in
terms of time period, style and
overall concern. Hence, you should not get confused with these
two terms.
Modern art embraces the artistic works produced between 1860s to
1970s, and refers to the
style and philosophy of art during that time period. During this
period, the modern artists threw
aside the past traditions to experiment with the modern ways of
seeing and with innovative ideas
about the nature of materials and art functions.
Abstraction is the main features of the much modern art and more
latest artistic works are often
called the post modern or the contemporary.

define their collections as including the art produced since
1945.
Today, contemporary art is not only used popularly for the
decorative purposes but they are also
considered as the best medium to depict conceptual, social as
well as the political values of thepresent era. Now contemporary
art is more socially aware than the modern art. However, you
should not forget that each of these artworks has its own values
and distinctiveness and both are
the mediums which artists used to express their views and
concern about the world they areliving in during their respective
time periods.
Spirituality, international politics, global warming, human
rights and economics are the main
subjects of contemporary artworks. Here, artists dont care about
the idea of purity which theydid in the modern art. Now the
contemporary artists prefer the topics like politics and global
warming rather than the aesthetic beauty and purity of the art
works.
These days, contemporary artworks are exhibited by the
commercial contemporary art gallery(s),
individual collectors, contemporary arts museums, publicly
funded organizations and by artists
themselves in their own places. Now contemporary artists are not
only appreciated by grants and
awards and prices but many art aficionados also buy their
contemporary artworks.
