WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IS THE CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT OF THE WORLD AROUND US, BOTH LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY, WITH A VIEW TO ENSURING A QUALITY OF LIFE FOR EACH PERSON ON THE PLANET,
WHILST REDUCING THE IMPACT ON SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENT SECTORS
FOR THE CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS
WHAT ARE THE PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
LIVING WITHIN ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITS
Respecting the limits of the planet’s environment, resources and biodiversity – to
improve our environment and ensure that the natural resources needed for life are
unimpaired and remain so for future generations
ENSURING A STRONG, HEALTHY AND JUST SOCIETY
Meeting the diverse needs of all people in existing and future communities,
promoting personal wellbeing, social cohesion and inclusion, and creating
equal opportunity
ACHIEVING A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY
Building a strong, stable and sustainable economy which provides prosperity and
opportunities for all, and in which environmental and social costs fall on those
who impose them (polluter pays), and efficient resource use is incentivised
USING SOUND SCIENCE RESPONSIBLY
Ensuring policy is developed and implemented on the basis of strong scientific
evidence, whilst taking into account scientific uncertainty (through the
precautionary principle) as well as public attitudes and values
PROMOTING GOOD GOVERNANCE
Actively promoting effective, participative systems of governance in all levels of society – engaging people’s
creativity, energy and diversity
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE WORLD AROUND US?
LET’S LOOK AT JUST A SINGLE ISSUE FACING OUR PLANET…….POVERTY
This video was first shown in 2013 through Comic Relief
SO HOW DOES POVERTY AFFECT US HERE IN THE UK?
LET’S LOOK AT JUST A SINGLE ISSUE IN THE UK
FOODBANKS
WHAT CHALLENGES DO WE FACE?
Everything we do, every plan that is put into action, every decision that is made
will face certain challenges.
Here are just 3 of them
COST
The big one. The main talking point in any process or plan will be how much it will cost?
Who will pay for it? How will the money be raised? Is that amount and method sustainable?
Sustainability will always be a factor in cost. If a project needs ongoing funding, then a single injection of funds is not a feasible solution as
eventually that money will run out.
LOCATION
Where will the project be based?
How will it be accessed?
Is the current infrastructure able to cope with extra demands, such as
traffic?
Will the project have a detrimental or positive effect on the surrounding area?
WHO IS IT FOR?
Who will benefit?
How will people be referred?
How will it be means-tested?
Who will monitor these?
Is there an ongoing support plan or will people become reliant?
WHY DO WE NEED SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
Economic, Environmental and Social challenges exist in their part, or as a combination, in any
development, but without global developments being sustainable; our towns, countries and
eventually our world face an uncertain future.
The future of our planet is as much of a responsibility, today, as current global affairs
