What is Stealth Technology?

• Stealth technology can be termed as LO technology (low observable technology)

• It is a sub discipline of military tactics and passive electronic countermeasures , which cover a range of techniques to make them less visible or fool the radar, sonar, infrared and other detection methods.

• It basically corresponds to military camouflage.

Goal of Stealth Technology

• The airplane can be shaped so that any radar signals it reflects are reflected away from the radar equipment.• The airplane can be covered in materials that

absorb radar signals.

How does Stealth Work?

• It works on the principle of reflection and absorption as well as redirection.• Interferes with communication.• 2 structure surface designs of stealth aircrafts.• RAS and RAM

RAM (Radar Absorbent Material)

• Paints are used especially on the edges of metal surfaces.• Thickness and material of RAM may vary.• Iron ball paint is used.

RAS (Radar Absorbent Surfaces)

• Deflects incoming Radar.• Reduces detection range.• Structures include wings ,refuelling boom.• Works due to angles of structures and how they are

placed.• It shouldn’t have 90 degree angles.• It uses reflection.

R A D A R

• The radar antenna to send out a burst of radio energy, which is then reflected back by any object it happens to encounter.• The radar antenna measures the time it takes for

the reflection to arrive, and with that information can tell how far away the object is.• The metal body of an airplane is very good at

reflecting radar signals, and this makes it easy to find and track airplanes with radar equipment.

S O N A R

• Sonar is a technique that uses sound propagation (usually underwater, as in submarine navigation) to navigate, communicate with or detect objects on or under the surface of the water, such as other vessels.

Plasma Stealth

• “Active Stealth”• Inject stream of plasma.• Covers entire body of aircraft• Absorbs most electromagnetic energy of radar

Detection Methods

• On a radar screen, aircraft will have their radar cross sections with respect to their size.• A proven method to detect and destroy stealth aircraft is

to triangulate its location with a network of radar systems. • This was done while the F-117 was shot down during the

NATO offensive over Yugoslavia

• Scientists have found a method to detect stealth aircraft with the help of microwaves similar to the ones emitted by the cell phone towers.

Disadvantages of Stealth Technology

• Stealth aircraft cannot fly as fast or is not maneuverable like conventional aircraft.• As most of the payload is carried internally in a

stealth aircraft to reduce the radar signature, weapons can only occupy a less amount of space internally.• The biggest disadvantage stealth aircraft is its

cost, which runs in the tune of millions and billions.

Advantages Stealth Technology

• Invisible to radars• Fewer weapons and their parent platforms need to

be allocated to any given mission, and finally the end result is that a greater number of targets can be confidently engaged with a given force.

Development of Stealth Technology in India

• The HAL Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is an Indian proposal for a fifth-generation fighter aircraft being developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and designed by India's Aeronautical Development Agency.• It is a single seat twin engine, stealth super

maneuverable all weather multi role fighter aircraft.
