What Is Rococo?By Colleen Messina

Rococo is a fanciful art style of the 18th century that broke away from the stuffy style of painting that came before it. It is easy to smile when you look at a Rococo painting with the gentle ladies on nature hikes in their extravagantly ruffled dresses.

The word Rococo came from two words. It was a combination of the French word rocaille, which means shell, and the Italian word barocco, which means "playful decoration with irregular stones and shells." Rococo pictures are full of gentle curves and round forms that helped give the style its name.

The Baroque style, which came before the Rococo style, was a lot more serious. Baroque artists liked dark colors. Baroque artists painted heroes and suffering martyrs. During the reign of King Louis XIV, the French Baroque artists followed strict rules. After the death of the Sun King in 1715, rules were relaxed. Paintings became less formal, and Rococo art began. Rococo art reached its height around the 1730s.

Rococo artists showed wealthy people having fun in nature. The gentlemen played games, and the ladies wore elegant costumes. Some people thought this art style was silly. Rococo artists seemed to live in a fantasy world, and they used pastel colors in their paintings. They painted pictures of love and romance with fat, winged cherubs hovering close by. These artists also showed loving family scenes. It was the first time that families had been a major subject in art.

One famous painter of the Rococo style was Thomas Gainsborough. He lived in England and started to study painting at the age of fourteen. After five years of taking art classes, he married an heiress, and he earned a living by painting portraits. You might have seen one of his famous paintings called The Blue Boy. This painting shows a young boy in a blue satin suit with a bold stare. He has a large hat with a gorgeous white feather in one hand. He has fat bows on his shoes and white knee-high stockings. Around his neck is a fancy collar. The Blue Boy does not look like he had a very hard life at all!

Another famous Rococo painter was Jean-Antoine Watteau. In Paris, the young man saw many beautiful paintings that helped him form his style. He studied art at the royal academy of art in Paris. Watteau painted Embarkation for Cythera. This painting, with its fluffy clouds, feathery trees, and finely dressed aristocrats shows the elegant Rococo style. This painting is now in the Louvre in Paris.

Many Rococo artists wanted to show a fantasy world in their paintings. They moved away from stuffy rules. This light-hearted style made people forget their troubles, and it can still make us smile today.

Dwight EisenhowerBy Meg Leonard

Dwight Eisenhower was our thirty-fourth president. He was born in Texas in 1890. He grew up in Abilene, Kansas. Eisenhower was a good athlete in high school. After high school, he went to West Point. He served in the Army. He led troops during World War II. He was a hero. When World War II was over, Eisenhower became president of Columbia University. He left this job to command NATO forces. NATO is a group of countries that works for peace. Supporters of Eisenhower convinced him to run for president. He won in 1952. Many things happened during his two terms. Eisenhower worked hard to keep peace between the United States and Russia. He wanted peace among all countries. Alaska and Hawaii became states during his second term. Schools were desegregated. This meant that children of all races went to the same school. The military was also desegregated. Eisenhower signed a law that approved the building of interstate highways. Eisenhower retired in 1961. He died 8 years later.

Captain Maher's Job: Is the Hudson River Safe?By Jennifer Kenny

Captain Maher has a special job. He goes up and down the Hudson River almost five days a week. He doesn't run a ferry. He doesn't take people on vacation. Instead, he's part of a science team that studies the water.

It has been more than 400 years since Henry Hudson took his trip on what was to become the Hudson River. Has the river changed at all? Yes, it has, but not necessarily for the better. For many years, things people did put lots of waste into the Hudson River. Around forty years ago, some clean water laws began. Those laws have made some of the water cleaner, but it still has a very long road ahead of it.

Captain Maher thinks the river is hurt by a few things. Some of these are what was put in the river in the past and old storm water treatment systems. The building of new homes along the water and climate change also hurt. How clean the water is makes such a difference to people that Captain Maher is asked every day if the Hudson is clean enough to swim in. It's an important question. The answer changes based on the day and where he is on the river. Some areas are never safe to swim in. Other areas can be very good one day but very bad the next. People who really know the river know to stay out after it has rained, just in case raw sewage has been washed in. Where does the sewage come from? Much of it is dumped because of the old wastewater treatment plants. In fact, that adds up to billions of gallons.

Another problem is the old General Motors plants. Toxic chemicals called PCBs from those plants have destroyed much of the Hudson's fishing business. Also another old factory used to place a substance much like tar into the river.

The next problem may not be so clear. Who doesn't enjoy a home by the water? There are lots of new homes planned on both sides of the Hudson River. Today these homes may be friendlier to the river, but any homes right on the water increase the chances of flooding. That adds sewage and storm water.

None of these problems will go away immediately. Changes take time and money. People have to be willing to bring about this change, too.

How does Captain Maher help? He and his crew take water samples. They check for the good and the bad. That means counting nutrients, bacteria, and sewage. Over two years he's seen very clean areas and very unsafe ones, too. These areas can be very close together. In general, the middle of the river is the cleanest. If you want to swim, though, how do you get from the shoreline to the middle without swimming through the dirty parts? Captain Maher has found that rain and snow make a difference, too. Even a little rain or snow puts raw sewage into the river near cities.

Captain Maher can describe what he sees. Sometimes the same river looks different from one area to the next. Sometimes it looks just like it should, like water. Sometimes it's reddish. Sometimes it's green and milky. Sometimes it's just black and dirty.

Captain Maher wants a safe river - for boating, swimming, and fishing. Right now the river changes too much to say it's safe all the time. When it's not clean, people can get diarrhea and rashes just by stepping in.

Millions of people live near the Hudson River. Captain Maher wants to stop pollution, control the amount of new building projects, protect the fish, and make the water clean enough for swimming. Only time will tell if all of this can really happen.

Landforms: Marshes and SwampsBy Cindy Grigg

Marshes and swamps are types of wetlands. They are found along rivers, ponds, lakes, and seacoasts. They may have fresh water, salt water, or brine. Brine is found where fresh water mixes with sea water. This often happens where a river empties into an ocean.

There are many kinds of wildlife in swamps and marshes. They are homes to mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Their water often comes from rivers and is rich in minerals and dissolved nutrients that are needed by plants.

Swamps have many trees, bushes, and shrubs. Some of them grow quite large. Marshes, on the other hand, have mostly grasses and a few small shrubs. Both swamps and marshes are like very shallow lakes. The water is shallow enough to let plants grow in the mud but reach out of the water's surface.

Some swamps develop from marshes that slowly fill in with more sediment. This allows more trees and shrubs to grow. Larger plants shade the smaller plants that first grew in the marsh, and they die out. The Florida Everglades is just one example of a combined marsh and swamp.

Marshes and swamps are home to many plants and animals. They store water. They help control flooding. They are important landforms.

Keeping Your Respiratory System HealthyBy Brandi Waters

Breathing is something that you do every minute of every day. You do it from the moment you are born until the moment you die. Breathing keeps you alive. Your respiratory system includes all of the parts of your body that help you breathe. It includes you nose, throat, windpipe, voice box, and lungs, as well as other parts and muscles that help the respiratory system do its job. Your respiratory system works hard and does a very important job. Shouldn't you do all that you can to keep it healthy? The good news is that it is easy to take care of your respiratory system. The most important thing that you can do is to NOT do something! Don't smoke. Cigarette smoke is full of harmful chemicals and sticky substances. It coats your lungs and the tiny hairs, called cilia, throughout your respiratory system. Not only is this gross, it also keeps your respiratory system from working at its best. If you smoke for many years, your respiratory system could stop working at all! Do yourself a favor and don't smoke. Exercise is something that you can do to keep your respiratory system healthy. Exercise makes your lungs work harder. This makes them stronger, just like lifting weights makes your muscles stronger.

Lois LowryBy Jennifer Kenny

Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1937, in Hawaii. Her parents' names were Robert and Katharine Hammersberg. Her father was an army dentist, so her family lived as other military families do, moving all over the world. In her family, Lois was the middle child of three. She had an older sister named Helen and a younger brother named Jon.

As a young child, Lois enjoyed being alone, reading books, and using her imagination. Lois wanted to be a writer from the time she was eight years old. She loved to write. She developed a love of language by reading. Even as a child, Lois wanted to read more than play ball or hang out.

Growing up, she lived in New York and Pennsylvania for a while. She went to high school in New York City. She started college at Brown University in Rhode Island. At age 19, she married a naval officer named Donald Lowry. Lois and her husband moved around a great deal as well - California, Connecticut, Florida, South Carolina, and so on. Soon they had four children under the age of 5. Her husband finished his service and attended Harvard Law School while she raised their children. When they were in Maine, she also returned to college, attending the University of Southern Maine. She even went on to graduate school. Then she started to write professionally. In 1977, she and Donald divorced.

Lois's first book was A Summer to Die. It was the tale of two sisters, Meg and Molly, who fought like most sisters do. Then Molly gets very sick, and the book continues to follow what happens to Meg as a result of her sister's serious illness and death. This book is a work of fiction, but it does loosely follow the death of Lois's sister in real life.

In 1979, Lois began her famous Anastasia series. (Anastasia Krupnik, Anastasia on Her Own, etc.) The Anastasia books make kids laugh. They are light and fun, although there are some serious topics in the books. The Sam Krupnik series came from the Anastasia books. Sam is the brother of Anastasia. This is called the little brother series. Some of the titles include All about Sam and Attaboy, Sam! In the Anastasia and Sam books, there are many comedic misadventures, but understanding and reason usually wins out.

Another series of Lois Lowry's is the Tate series. These are a set of books about a brother and sister who fight a lot. One example from this set is The One Hundredth Thing about Caroline. Lois has also written a series about Mrs. Pidgeon and her second grade class. These are the Gooney Bird books. One example from this set is Gooney Bird and the Room Mother.

In 1990, Lois Lowry published Number the Stars. This is the story of a family who protects a child when the Germans begin to relocate the Jewish people during the Holocaust. Ordinary citizens become heroes. Lois Lowry won her first Newbery Medal for this book.

Lois Lowry has also completed a quartet. This means a set of four books. The first one is very famous. It is called The Giver. The setting is in the future in a society where everything is perfect and no one lacks anything - or so it seems. Lois won the Newbery Medal for this book in 1994. The saga continues in Gathering Blue and Messenger. The fourth book, Son, was published in 2012.

A few years after her divorce, she met Martin Small, and they spent thirty happy years together. Sadly, Martin died in 2011. Her son was killed in a plane crash in 1995. He was a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Since he passed away, she would like to see an end to conflict. One of her daughters has become disabled from a central nervous system disease. This has taught her the need for people to connect with one another. On a happier note, Lois now has four grandchildren - three boys and a girl. This has taught her the importance of caring for one another.

Lois Lowry currently lives in Massachusetts and Maine. She continues to write. She likes to sit at her desk and begin writing by 8 a.m. Then she'll stop for lunch and write until the middle of the afternoon. It usually takes her six months to finish a book.

Lois loves dogs. She enjoys knitting, reading, and going to the movies. She likes to garden and cook as well.

What does Lois tell children who want to have the same career as she does? Lois recommends that children read a lot if they want to become an author. They should think about how someone writes as they read a book. She also feels children should observe others. Her observations, combined with her imagination, create most of what she writes.

Lois has covered many topics in her work - adoption, mental illness, cancer, the Holocaust, and the future. She puts her characters in situations that make readers think. Her recurring themes of saying goodbye, finding a place to belong, and the importance of making connections are messages she tries to convey. Lois believes she writes about what she has a passion for, and readers certainly have responded to her work.
