What if you’ve only put 2000 km on your vehicle in three months? The additives have an expiry date and will no longer be doing their job.

That is just an example of what is happening. All vehicle and oil manufacturers have a set amount of kilometres or time that they recommend changing your fl uids at to ensure proper function of all components. Check your owner’s manual.

Unfortunately, in our climate heat is not the only thing we need to worry about for our cars. Our winters get extremely cold. How is that an issue you may ask? Have you ever noticed that when it is cold outside and warm inside your house you see moisture on your windows? That’s condensation that develops from difference in temperatures.

The same thing happens inside all of your vehicle’s parts that generate heat. Your hot vehicle cools down after you shut it off. In the winter time the vehicle cools off a lot faster which causes condensation to build up. The cold temperature also makes it longer for vehicles to get to operating temperature, which allows the heat from the components to burn off that moisture and condensation. If you have moisture inside your engine when it’s cold that moisture will freeze and, depending on how much moisture has built up, can also cause its own set of problems.

So always make sure to change your fl uids regularly to insure your vehicle stays happy and healthy. Keep your fl uids clean and condensation free by changing them regularly and following the recommended intervals for them to be changed. If you would like to know when those extra services need to be done on your vehicle come by The Lubrication Station and ask anyone of our knowledgeable staff.

Regular maintenance is a term that is used in our industry often but not everyone knows what that means. Regular maintenance doesn’t only extend to oil changes, it goes for all parts on your vehicle, transmission, 4x4 system, suspension, and brakes, require regular maintenance for proper operation. That is why regular maintenance is so very important; if things don’t get maintained they can cause catastrophic failure and potential harm to you or others.

What is the purpose of changing all the fl uids in your vehicle on a regular basis? The easy answer is heat. Heat is what causes fl uids to get “dirty”. Dirty is not really the right word. The fl uids in your vehicle are becoming dark because the fl uid is getting burnt. All of the moving parts inside your engine, transmission (and differentials for 4X4) heat up while being used and the fl uid inside those parts ensure that the moving elements stay lubricated and as cool as possible for proper use and effi ciency.

When fl uids age the additives that help keep everything cool start to break down.

That is why it is recommend that fl uids be changed after a certain amount of kilometers or a set amount of time. Conventional engine oil is recommended to be changed every 5000 kms or three months, after which the engine oil is no longer working properly to protect your engine as the

additives have been burnt off.
