How do you know if something is a poem?
1. Don’t read line-by-line. Instead, look at sentences.
2. Reorganize words so that they make grammatical sense in your paraphrase.
3. Put missing words back in to help you make sense of the meaning, or look up unfamiliar words.
3 tips for reading poetry
For “Hotel California,” do the following as you listen: Highlight or underline any words or phrases
that stand out to you. After you have read it through once, look at
what you noticed. Do the words or phrases have anything in common?
Now take a look at the title. What might be the relationship of the title to the poem?
Finally, based on all you’ve noticed and thought, what do you think the theme of the poem is?
