To pull off twelve years of successful Oktoberfest fairs, the St. Dorothy community has needed many things: the support of our pastor, the enthusiasm of parish families, the generosity of donors and vendors, the intercession of St. Dorothy herself, and most especially the unceasing efforts of volunteers. Oktoberfest takes a tremendous amount of work. Planning begins in earnest in August. But preparations for the next fair really begin as the current fair is being packed up. As materials are packed away, inventories are done so planners know what supplies will be on hand for the next fall and what prizes and other supplies will have to be ordered. In addition, planners carefully study the records of each booth so that they can pinpoint what booths need to be stocked more frequently and which may need a fresh approach. Without the volunteers, there would be no Oktoberfest. Karen Rogers, Patty Dwyer, Bill Nolan, and Carolyn Manning were the first Oktoberfest Committee. Karen, Bill, and Patty are still part of the core organizing team. Kara Albanese joined the team about five years ago and she now manages the booths and games. These are the people who have the dates for the fair on their calendars a year in advance. They are the ones who schedule vacation for fair week and move into the Rectory garage for the entire week to ensure things run smoothly. Once the real work starts in August, Oktoberfest becomes a family affair. As the planning takes up more time, spouses and family members jump in to help with the care of younger children as our devoted volunteers invest all the time that is needed to make the event a success. Older children are often drafted to help move boxes or to set up or clean up. It is probably fair to say that none of them knew exactly what they were getting into when they agreed to help organize Oktoberfest. But they all agree that there is tremendous satisfaction in putting together such a wonderful event – an event that helps our children and our parish. It is clear that they love the work because the Dwyer, Rogers, and Nolan children have all graduated from St. Dorothy School and their parents are still involved. Kara Albanese’s son graduates in May, but she has already committed to at least one more year. As Karen says, “The reason I remain involved has a lot to do with my belief that I should give back to the community that had such a positive influence on my family. I was raised by parents who were visibly involved in my home parish and school and remember fondly my parents’ dedication. I was influenced by this desire to help out within our community and want to show my children the importance of giving back and being actively involved in something greater than our little family.” Bill says he initially thought he’d be making a five-year commitment and that the revenue would be the most important part. Now, after twelve years, he says, “The biggest part for me has been the community building within St. Dot’s and in our surrounding community. I think one of the best moments for me happened this year when my daughter, who graduated in 2012, took the train home from college in New York to be at and to work at the fair. I have no doubt my younger daughter (‘15) will be doing the same.” The Oktoberfest Fair would not be successful without the time and dedication of so many school families and parishioners. There are those who bake for the sweets table and those who spend an evening manning a booth or busily dishing out meals at the food court. There is even a special group of folks who come the last night of the fair to pack up all the supplies and return them to storage. There are so many that help but more is always needed. Yes, it can be tiring, but it is a wonderful way to spend time with other parishioners and give back to the parish community. So, even if you can’t move into the Rectory garage for the week, there are many opportunities to volunteer and terrific mentors to guide you through the tasks.Let’s carry on this tradition for many, many years to come!

Kara Albanese joined the team about five years ago and she now manages the booths

and games.

Kara Albanese’s son graduates

in May, but she has already committed to at least one more year. As Karen says, “The reason I remain involved has a lot to do with my belief that I should give back to the community that had such a positive influence on my family. I was raised by parents who were visibly involved in my home

parish and school and remember fondly my parents’ dedication. I was influenced by this desire to help out within our community and want to show my children the importance of giving back and being actively involved in something greater than our little family.”

Bill says he initially thought he’d be making a five-year commitment and that the revenue would be the most important part. Now, after twelve years, he says, “The biggest part for me has been the community building within St. Dot’s and in our surrounding community. I think one of the best moments for me happened this year when my daughter, who graduated in 2012, took the train home from college in New York to be at and to work at the fair. I have no doubt my younger daughter (‘15) will be doing the same.”

The Oktoberfest Fair would not be successful without the time and dedication of so many school families and parishioners.

FALL/WINTER 2016

A Fair Amount of Work

What is it?

Twelve years later and it’s still fun and games for Patty Dwyer and Bill Nolan! The late shift finally takes a break on the last night of the fair.

With this newsletter, we thought we would try a little game. This is a picture of something that has been in plain sight at St. Dot’s for decades. If you still go up to the school on a regular basis, this might not be a challenge for you. But, if you have not been here for years (or decades) this might have you stumped.

Do you know what it is??? Let us know at [email protected]. A prize will be awarded to a randomly selected correct answer. Check out the next newsletter (Spring 2017) for the answer!

What a great fall season for our CYO teams! Five of our teams made it to championship games, and two won their championships. One highlight of the Fall season was our “Dot’s Day” at Steel Field, where many of the teams displayed their athleticism and fans showed their spirit.

Congratulations to the Junior Varsity Volleyball team for winning the Region 25 championship! The team was coached by Michelle Wolf and Sara Mishinkish. The girls worked hard, were determined, and played with heart to bring that championship home for their school. Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball team on taking second place in the Region this year! The team’s head coach was Karen Keppel and assistant coach was Dolores O’Toole.

Congrats to the Junior Varsity Football team for their win at the Parade of Champions placing first in Division 2! They defeated Saints Simon and Jude with a score of 8-6 in a hard-fought game. The undefeated team was head coached by Joe MacNeal and assisted by John Butler, Dave Fosbenner, Mark Banes, and Matt Julien. Varsity Football took second place in the region! Head coach Brian Gallagher

and his assistants John Ahern, John Lilly, Tom Coco, Joe Gillin, and Sam Schmucker led the boys in a great season. Both teams played their championship games under the Friday night lights at Cardinal O’Hara High School.

The Cheerleading squad, coached by Kim Sheridan, Steph Ruffo, Jen Vraim, and BJ Griffin, led the fans in cheers at many of the games and had tons of spirit! Children in Grades 2-8 are eligible to be on the team.

Congratulations to the St. Dorothy 2016 Cross Country team, who just wrapped up another successful season. The roster of 45 runners, coached by Mike Fohner and Bob Gross, had a formidable showing at the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Championships on Sunday, October 30th. After two months of training and practice meets at Belmont Plateau, many of our runners attained personal records at Championships while leading our divisional teams to strong standings. With roughly 97 parishes represented, our Novice Girls team took 8th place overall, while our Novice Boys took 17th. Two of our runners also received medals for finishing in the top 15 runners of their divisions: sub-novices Reese Wolf and P.J. Lee.

Children in Grades K-8 are eligible to run cross country.

The girls’ varsity Field Hockey team won a double overtime and strokes game to make it into the Regional semi-finals. In her 17th year of coaching hockey at Dot’s, the girls were lead by Jill Camuti and assisted by Steph Gillin and Marie Pat Romano. Marie Pat also coaches the JV girls team.

St. Dorothy Soccer teams played their annual Turkey Cup matchup against St. Bernie’s. Varsity, coached by Ed Miller with the help of Brian Smith, Brendan Smith, and Mark McCarty, won their game 1-0. School HappeningsWhen Bob Smith’s daughter, Bridget,

asked to join Forensics in the fall of 1997, Bob said sure, as long as he didn’t have to do anything! Nineteen years later, Bob is still the moderator of St. Dorothy’s Forensics team. Next year will mark his 20th year volunteering. He says the most rewarding part is seeing the kids grow from their first year participating in the program to their third year. He especially likes seeing the quiet kids come out of their shell as they compete.

The Forensics team has a rich history at St. Dorothy School. They practice Tuesday nights and participate in various tournaments throughout the Archdiocese from November through May. Current student, Bridget Lain explains, “You get to pick a piece or poem to practice speaking by yourself or sometimes as a duet.” Mr. Smith “helps to prepare you to make your presentation better” says Lain. When asked about Mr. Smith, teammate Fiona Scherf said, “He’s so fun!”

Principal, Louise Sheehan, says Forensics provides life-long skills; “It improves one’s ability to express his/her thoughts clearly and fluently. It enhances one’s confidence, and it is intellectually challenging.” The current team members echoed Mrs. Sheehan’s praise for the program. Maxine Rich says, “I like it because it helps with presentations at school to speak with more confidence.” Sarah Schumacher says, “It helps more with public speaking for high school and college presentations.”

Former students were also very happy to explain the benefits of taking part in Forensics. Dana (Mazzenga) Greto (’96) recalled her participation in Forensics with fondness, “I owe all of my acting career successes to those early days when a little activity they called

“forensics” (not to be confused with the science – ha!) gave me an exceptional start at trusting myself to speak in front of others.” Matt Short (’00) shared, “Mr. Smith did a great job of encouraging us to support each other so that we could help each other. You were always up there alone in competitions, but the team helped you get ready.”

Both Paul (‘05) and Colleen (‘07) McGonigal begrudgingly participated in forensics under the tutelage of Bob Smith. Now that they use their public speaking skills often, they realize how valuable forensics was to them. Paul said, “I learned way more about public speaking, presentation style, eye contact, knowing your audience, being able to debate a topic with logic from Mr. Smith than from any public speaking course offered at the Prep or in college.” Colleen agrees and added, “Without a doubt, Mr. Smith was the best”

We wish this year’s team much success and thank Bob for his many years of dedication to the Forensics program at St. Dot’s!

Advanced Math Program Comes to St. Dorothy

The advanced math classes are being taught by Mrs. Erzsebet Monsanto. See her profile on page 4.

Beginning in September 2016, St. Dorothy School introduced an Advanced Math program for students in Grades 5-8. Students admitted to the program had to meet specific criteria including academic performance as

indicated on standardized testing, classroom performance, work ethic, attendance, and punctuality. A new classroom was constructed in the annex of the school to accommodate the class.

In Honor of Our VeteransOn November 11th, St. Dorothy School

celebrated Veterans Day by hosting our veterans and showing our appreciation through a celebration in their honor. Veterans in the parish as well as those living outside the parish who are related to one of our students were invited to come and share their memories with our school family. The veterans who came displayed memorabilia such as uniforms, medals, certificates of commendation, and their personal photographs. Students also brought in memorabilia of deceased family members who served our nation. All of the items were placed along a memory wall for everyone to view. The feelings of the day were nicely summarized by this statement on the memory wall:

To our men and women in uniform, past, present, and future,

God bless you and thank you!

One of the highlights of the day was 96-year old, WWII veteran Dominic C. Costanzo. He is a St. Dorothy parishioner and was a tail gunner in the Air Force.

If you look closely at Dominic Costanzo’s hat (top center), you can see on the brim that he drew a bomb for every mission he flew – 50 in over 10 countries!

Mr. Costanzo enjoyed the celebration with his daughter, Lisa.

Lt. Colonel Onintza Regil (US Army) is the aunt of Roman & Simon Colaberdino.

The Class of 1966 celebrated their 50th Reunion on Friday, September 17th. Classmates came from as far away as Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Florida, Rhode Island, and Maryland as well as from all over Pennsylvania. The class also showed their loyalty to St. Dot’s through a generous donation to the Annual Fund.

Bernadette Naab summed it up best when she said, “Time and distance did not break the bonds we formed in the those wonderful days at St. Dot’s 50+ years ago.”

Members of the Class of 1981 celebrated their 35th anniversary reunion at The Lamb Tavern on November 18th.

On October 14th, the seventh grade class formed a “Living Rosary” in the Church. This annual performance has proven to be both a creative as well as meaningful way for the students to practice their faith at a deeper level.

On November 3rd, the second grade children performed their annual All Saints Day Prayer Service. Each student selects a saint and researches several facts about their saint. For the prayer service, students dress up as their saint and take turns sharing the information they learned. The children also sing several beautiful songs as part of the service.

Each year St. Dorothy School holds a Mercy Day Prayer Service to honor the Mercy sisters who serve our parish and school. Mercy Day is September 24th and this year’s service was on September 23rd.

A great season was had by the Junior Varsity soccer, which was coached by Bill Bradley, Harry McKenna, and Mary Lou Donahue.

Kara Albanese joined the team about five years ago and she now manages the booths

and games.
