Atmospheric depression (air rising) – 1. a depression passing over a sea means there is low pressure

in the area. 2. This allows the water level to rise (directly beneath the

depression) whilst the surrounding waters remain at ‘normal’ level.

3. This forms a bulge in the sea which will travel with the depression as it moves (in this case, southwards via the North Sea).

Other factors:

High winds – ‘whip’ up the waves causing them to be bigger and more powerful.

High tides – due to time of year and location of the moon, tides are high. This means sea level is higher than normal.

Next lessons task

Create a news report on the storm surge (either written or video).

Your report needs to include the following:-what a storm surge is -how a storm surge is created-where the storm surge hit (you can focus on one area)-what the effects were (social, economic and environmental)-pictures and maps of the affected areas

Peer assess:

1. What is a storm surge? A powerful sea flood2. Explain one cause of a storm surge – low pressure over the

sea, causing a bulge to form – strong winds. – high tides.3. Which areas in the UK were affected? Low lying coastal

areas, especially the east coast of the UK4. Name two effects from the following:

Social – people left homeless, possessions destroyed, people evacuated, jobs lost.

Economic – cost of clearing up, cost of rebuilding, farmers fields destroyed.

Environmental – sea life centre damaged, habitats destroyed,

Things to include

Things to explain:

How a storm surge is created (depression, strong winds, high tide)

Where the storm surge hit (you can focus on one place e.g. Hemsby, Norfolk)

What the social, economic and environmental effects were

Things to remember:

Make sure it is in order (what> causes>effects)

Include key geographical words

Ensure Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar are accurate.

Pictures and maps of the affected areas

Mini review: have you?• Described what a storm surge is?• Explained how the storm surge was created? The storm surge was caused when an area of low pressure….This means that….There were also strong winds…. As well as high tides….

• Said when the storm surge hit?• Identified places that were affected?• Described the social, economic and environmental effects and

given evidence. People were affected by the storm surge because….this means that• Included a map and images?
