WHAT IS AR? AUGMENTED REALITY!

• A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.

• Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one. Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world.

• One of the earliest examples of technology being used to actually augment reality is…a green screen!

• Credited to Larry Butler, a scene featuring a genie escaping from a bottle was the first use of a proper blue screen process to create a traveling matte for The Thief of Bagdad (1940), which won the Academy Award for Visual Effects that year.

• First, I downloaded the “Veescope Live” app (it is free, but after using it for a few projects now, I just might purchase the pro pack).

NEXT, I HUNG UP A GREEN TABLE CLOTH THAT I PURCHASED AT THE DOLLAR STORE

THEN, I USED A LAMP TO HELP DISPLACE THE LIGHT EVEN OVER THE TABLECLOTH TO PREVENT SHADOWS

BOOM! GOOD TO GO!!!

• I used a free app called “Video Editor Free.”

• Check this out as well! It did not do exactly what I wanted for this specific video, but still a great app to use to make exciting videos!

Both businesses and individuals use Aurasma to create and share their own augmented reality experiences as well as to discover hidden digital content around them.
