What makes an assignment in India a success?Plenty of support needs to be provided for the family, especially in the preparation stage and initialfew months on arrival. With the right support expats usually find the assignment in India afascinating and fulfilling one. In fact most expats will not want to leave! What about returning Indians? Some Indians have been living overseas for 10 or 15 years since leaving University. The India theyreturn to will be very different to the one they left. They will also have been used to living life in theWest, therefore will face the same adaptability issues as an expat, sometimes even worse as theyhave higher expectations of a smoother settling in process than expats and may become frustratedwhen they face challenges. What about Expats?

Expats face different challenges. Everything in India is new to them and they often experience a"fear of the unknown." Taking it step by step and working with professionals will help them to settlein faster and adjust to their new environment. And the schools? This will depend on how long the child has been out of the Indian system. If they are following aninternational curriculum they will need to go into an International school, otherwise they will look for alocal private school. Schooling is always a sensitive issue as it's usually the family's top priority whenmoving. For HR Managers, it is important to have a clear policy to avoid miscommunication andconflict during the assignment, i.e. for additional costs for trips, equipment, travel, meals, etc.Schooling is also becoming an issue with the best schools facing waiting lists. It is imperative to startthis process early and set expectations. And finding a place to live?It is true the housing rentals are rising due to the increase in demand. Crown has people who live in

the main areas of India and have existing relationships with local realtors.
