– Naval Postgraduate School: Sept 2009– USC: some modules beginning Fall 2009
Implementations
• Rice– UC Davis: academic merit/promotion system– San Joaquin Delta: time workflow– Cornell: PDF workflow– IU: overall administrative workflow– Others ??
• Inside community• Outside community
Kuali Coeus:Upcoming Releases & Implementations
• NOTE: THESE DATES ARE TENTATIVE– Release 2.0 next month (all core functionality)– Coeus equivalency in the core by Dec 2010– Full equivalency by Dec 2011– Merging with Coeus organization as soon as
possible– Implementation of one or more modules this
year: UC Irvine, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, Indiana, Colorado State, Arizona
Kuali Student Update
• Release 1.0– Will be delivered as a ‘Founders’ Release– Schedule date is early April 2010
• Release 2.0– Delivers core functionality for records– Will likely be implemented by Berkeley, Maryland
first– Planning underway about scope and timeline
We’ve done some things right
• Disparate institutions CAN agree on software design
• Distributed teams can build enterprise-scale software
• Commercial partners can get involved in this model
• It really does work!• We can extend it to other models, such as Saas
We’ve had some issues
• The economy– On the upside, more interest– On the downside, one of our partners has been
forced to withdraw– We are communicating that open source allows
saved costs and control of destiny
We’ve had some issues
• Governance– We’ve made some tweaks in the projects– For example:
• Updated Rice charter to balance investing partner and application project influence
• Updated positions and governance may be forthcoming in Student to reflect the changes in the cycle of the project
• Updated Kuali Coeus timeline to facilitate merger with Coeus community
We’ve had some issues
• Implementations– On the upside, we have had successful
implementations and will have many more this year
– On the downside, resources of partners are stretched to continue to develop the code, while implementing the system on campus
We’ve had some issues
• Need to develop a new contribution model beyond our original approach
Contribution Model
• Purpose– Historically, Kuali has been “community source”– Want to begin leveraging resources more widely– Must maintain quality
!! CFOs require that debits & credits balance– Want to learn from other open source models
Contribution Model
• Approach– Create an open and public web site for
contributions– Use open tools to manage the process– Create ‘Levels of Trust’ for communication purposes– Code that is incorporated in an official release must
meet Kuali standards– This is still under discussion and should be
published later this year
