Old Testament Names of God
3 Basic Root Names• Elohim – might, majesty, strength• Yahweh – personal, “I am who I am”• Adonai – unique authority to be obeyed
4 Dominant Names from the Roots• Yahweh Sabaoth – “the Lord of Hosts”• El Elyon – “the Most High”• El Qodesh – “the Holy One”• El Shaddai – “the Almighty”
New Testament Names of God
• Same basic understanding of God as in OT but focusing on fewer aspects of His nature– God as Creator, King, Saviour, Judge
• Dominant concept is of God as Father– Fatherhood of God is a minor part of OT– 250x in NT & in every book of the NT (ex. 3 Jn)
What did Jesus Come to Do?
• To show what the Father is like– Jn 1:14 1:18 3:16
• To re-unite people to the Father– Jn 14:6 17:3 17:11
Justified or Adopted?
Justification• Made righteous before a
Holy God• Forensic issue – rooted in
Law & God is Judge• We are no longer liable to
death for our sins
Adoption• Made sons & daughters
before a loving Father• Family issue – rooted in
love & Father choosing us• We are no longer liable to
live as orphans – not lost and alone, on your own.
