What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the silent thief of sight

Why are frequent eye exams so important?

The greatest risk of vison loss is caused by late diagnosis. Therefore, regular check-ups by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist are important.

Risk factors

• Glaucoma is usually detected in a routine eye exam by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.

• Generally, glaucoma develops gradually over several years and often goes undetected in the early stages. High IOP can be the first sign of a problem.

• Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization. There were an estimated 60.5 million people with glaucoma in 2010.

• Glaucoma is a common eye disease in which vision is lost due to damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness.

• Vision loss or blindness can usually be prevented if glaucoma is detected early and treated.

• Only half of the people with glaucoma are aware of it.

• Glaucoma generally has no symptoms until vision loss has occurred.

• Damage that has already been done cannot be restored.

• In many cases, the progress of glaucoma can be slowed down or stopped with medication or other treatment.

The normal intraocular pressure is between 10 and 21 mmHg. If the pressure is between 22 and 29 mmHg, the risk for glaucoma is 10 times higher.

It is not only high intraocular pressure that matters; pressure variation is also important. In a healthy eye, the pressure variation is low, but glaucoma may cause pressure changes to be significant. Harmful intraocular pressure peaks occur individually at different times of the day.

The only way to manage glaucoma is to lower intraocular pressure either with eye drops or via surgical or laser treatment.

Icare HOME is the first intraocular pressure measuring device for home use. It enables long-term intraocular pressure monitoring and glaucoma management based on extensive data.
