•48 kilometers from the city of Tumaco, State of Nariño.

• Extreme humidity and heat.

• Seasons of extreme floods and non-rain.

• Marshy soil and poor growing conditions.

• Dangerous foraging animals.

• Little sustainable agriculture.

Living Conditions• Rural economy: People work mainly by collecting palm oil

seeds, cocoa beans, or coca leaves.

• Very limited access to hospitals and health facilities.

• High levels of malnutrition: Diet composed mainly of rice, plantain, fish, coconuts.

• Expensive trading: goods are scarce and basic necessities (soap, shoes, clothing ) sell for extremely high prices.

• Transportation limited to private river ferry/small boats is v very expensive..

•Contaminated water sources.

•No sewer systems, electricity, gas, trash collection, phone, TV, or internet services.

•Predominance of high-risk diseases such as malaria, leishmaniasis, VIH, and hemorrhagic dengue.

•Very limited access to hospitals and health facilities.

•Transportation limited to few private river ferry/small boats at high cost.

•Expensive trading: goods are scarce and basic necessities (soap, shoes, clothing) sell for extremely expensive prices.

•High crime rates.

Living Conditions

The people of these villages• OVERALL LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES: Afro-Colombian and displaced indigenous people

who have struggled for years with discrimination, extreme poverty, and violence.• VERY YOUNG POPULATION: 67% of the population is under 25 years of age.• FRAGMENTED FAMILY STRUCTURES: 62% of households are headed by single young

mothers (under age 30) with an average of 3 children - under 9 years old.• LOW INCOME: Only 492 people of 1,164 have monetary earnings. • HIGH LEVELS OF MALNUTRITION• INFORMAL ECONOMY: Bartering and subsistence.• ION: Diet composed mainly of rice, plantain, fish, coconuts.

Education and Recreation

• No access to elementary, middle , or high schools; no technical programs.• Only 9 people of these 10 villages (1,164) have completed high school. *• 57% of adults are illiterate. *• 70.17% of the population under age 25 have completed only 3 years of

school.* • Today, only 13% of children under age 12 have access to elementary

school*. • No community centers, social programs, churches, or recreation sources. • 5 bars and 3 brothels *.

Why help these communities?• This remote region has been ignored and abandoned for years by the National

Government for the difficulties in accessing the area.

• Public infrastructure and education have never been provided to the people of these communities, thus creating a never ending cycle of poverty and stagnation.

• Due to internal conflict, many children and teenagers have been recruited and/or are exposed to guerrilla, paramilitary, and narcotraffic groups, others arrived to the area as “Displaced Victims” as victims of war.

Fundamira in Action 2006 - 2009 • Fundamira maintained one rural

School that functioned in a temporary building donated specifically for this purpose.

• The temporary building had a very small capacity with no bathrooms: served Pre-school & First grade only for 30 children.

• Fundamira provided : two sets of

clothing & one pair of shoes for each child, school supplies, teaching materials, daily snacks, and one full –time salary for a pre-school teacher for three years.

From 2004-2009One little space with two purposes…

•A temporary rural School (Pre-K and 1st grade only for 30 children) that also served as an afternoon Adult Educational Center.

• 2007: Adult Literacy Program was piloted

•From February 2007 to April 2008, two sessions of the programs served 44 adults.

•11 adults completed the program with basic levels of reading and writing.

•The Fundamira Community Center aims to provide the infrastructure and the space for all members of the community to carry out activities to build, learn, share, foster, integrate and participate as members of their community.

•Full-time Pre-K & Elementary School to operate in proper conditions for the children to develop and learn.

•6 Classrooms, Computer Lab, Library, Meeting & Multimedia Room, Playground, Kitchen, & Bathrooms.

•Programs at the Fundamira Community and Vocational Center:1. Formal Pre-K and Elementary Education Program for their children2. Literacy Programs for Adults 3. Vocational and Technical training for Teenagers and Adults 4. Recreational areas and a place for community building, learning and integration.

These funds are used to fund meals, snacks, uniforms, teacher salaries, school supplies, and other maintenance expenses.
