What is Bulimia?

Bulimia also called bulimia nervosa in broad

terms is a serious eating disorder and a

psychological health condition where a

person experiences regular indulgence of

serious overeating.

This usually makes them have a feeling of guilt,

which can then lead to excessive reactions such

as deliberate vomiting or purging, crash dieting

and even excessive exercising.

The common result is a lifestyle in a cycle

of bingeing and purging.

Types Of Bulimia

There are two types of bulimia: the purging and

non purging type.

• The purging type: regularly engages in self-

induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives,

diuretics or enemas.

• The non-purging type: engages in other

unsuitable behaviours such as fasting or

excessive exercise, rather than purging.

Another common practice is to chew food and

then spit it out without swallowing it.

men

life but mainly women aged between 16 and 40.

• 64 percent of all bulimics have a near-normal

• People with bulimia binge on average 11 times

per week.

• People who frequently change diets are 18 times

more likely to become anorexic or bulimic than

their counter parts.

• Children of mothers that diet are more likely to

develop eating disorders like bulimia.

• Bulimia nervosa can affect children, but this is

extremely rare.
