What is Breakfast ?
Breakfast = first meal of the day
The word “Breakfast” means breaking the fast.
Why is Breakfast important?It provides us with energy,
makes us feel happier and enables us to do better work with better concentration.
Breakfast consumption is associated with:
Healthy body weight Lower intakes of fat, cholesterol Higher intakes of fiber Better overall nutrient intakes
Factors why people skip Breakfast
Do not feel hungry in the morning.
Wake up late.
Cultural.
To manage weight.
Skipping Breakfast to manage weight
Skipping breakfast to manage weight is not effective.
People who eat breakfast in the morning will: o Have lower body weighto Consume less fat and cholesterol o Consume a higher intake of fiber than those
who skip breakfast.

School Performance: More positive attitude towards school
Less likely to be tardy
Less likely to miss class
Improved math & reading scores
Fewer reported discipline problems
So what should I eat for breakfast?
Do I have to eat cereal?No, but cereal is good because it frequently
can be used as a “Vehicle Food”
Carries “missing” food groups:– Whole grains– Fresh fruit– Dairy
Cereal Food Labels
• Look for Low Fat, High Fiber, and low sugar
•Look for greater than 5 grams of fiber per serving.
•And less than 5 grams of sugar.
• These kind of cereals
• will NOT keep you going!
Breakfast can be “non breakfast” food too.
Ask permission to heat some leftovers. Learn to cook!
Breakfast can be fun and tasty!
Be sure to clean up after
yourself!
