SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA Coughing Wheezing or whistling sound Difficult breathing Chest tightness, “pain” Shallow breathing Fast breathing Blue or grey face & lips Skin and muscle retraction between ribs and at base of throat

AVOID TRIGGERS Allergens: Animal dander, pollen, molds, dust mites,

cockroach droppings, foods & additives Exercise: Excessive exercise (moderate is okay) Irritants : Smoke, pollution, odors, fumes & sprays Emotional Reactions: Sighing, crying & laughing Respiratory Infections: Colds, flu, sinus, etc. Medications: Some medications, especially aspirin Weather: Cold air, excess heat, humidity, dry climate Sleep: Allergens in room, drop in temp, heartburn Emotional Stressors: Family problems, school, etc.

2 Basic Types of Medications

Controllers (Daily)

• Controls and prevent attacks • Reduces inflammation of the airway and mucus production

Quick Relief Inhaler (As needed)• During an asthma attack to provide fast relief from symptoms • Before starting an activity involving known triggers• To relaxes muscle tightness around the

airways• Take as soon as symptoms begin
