What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscapes, work together to form a bubble of life. Ecosystems contain living and nonliving things. Living things include plants, animals, and other organisms. Nonliving things might include rocks, temperature, and humidity. Every part in an ecosystem depends on every part .A change in the temperature of an ecosystem will often affect what plants will grow there. This in turn affects what the animals can eat that live there. The whole surface of Earth is a series of connected ecosystems. Task 1: In your exercise book or on a blank sheet of paper write 1 – 8 down the left hand side of the page and identify the different eco – systems on the following pages. (Tip: If you remember the habitats topic in Year 2, these can also be identified as habitats!)

What is an ecosystem?...Task 2: a) Choose one of the ecosystems we have just looked at.Have a go at drawing diagram of one. You might like to think back to a rainforest like you did

  • What is an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscapes, work together to form a bubble of life.

Ecosystems contain living and nonliving things. Living things include plants, animals, and other organisms. Nonlivingthings might include rocks, temperature, and humidity.

Every part in an ecosystem depends on every part .A change in the temperature of an ecosystem will often affect what plants will grow there. This in turn affects what the animals can eat that live there.

The whole surface of Earth is a series of connected ecosystems.

    Task 1:

In your exercise book or on a blank sheet of paper write 1 – 8 down the left hand side of the page and identify the different eco – systems on the following pages. (Tip: If you remember the habitats topic in Year 2, these can also be identified as habitats!)

  • Task 2: a) Choose one of the ecosystems we have just looked at. Have a go at drawing diagram of one. You might like

to think back to a rainforest like you did in Year 3 or perhaps an ecosystem near your house like a forest or a river setting.

    b) In your picture can you draw and label as many of the living and non-living things that live there.c) You could use the examples of a pond or river from below if you wish look at this video,

https://www.nbclearn.com/portal/site/learn/cuecard/71411which explains a forest ecosystem. Remember to use a pencil and a ruler for scientific diagrams!

  • TASK 3Next week we are going to take a closer look at what helps living things in an ecosystem survive. Look at these statements and write next to each statement if they are (T) true or false (F). If you don’t know that’s OK… That is what we are going to find out! Just write DK (Don’t Know)

  • Task 4: Extension

This video explains what a forest ecosystem is. It also introduces us to the concept of a food chain and the concept of a balanced ecosystem. Sometimes things can upset the balance of an ecosystem like .Last week we talked about how the Coronavirus has impacted on the environment in different and positive ways.

Watch the video and find out what things can happen to different ecosystems when the balance is affected. https://www.nbclearn.com/portal/site/learn/cuecard/71411

    1) Make a list of the different natural disasters that can affect an ecosystem.2) Write down 3 or 4 ways that the forest was affected by fire.
