Zentangles
Using doodling to relax and grow.
What is a Zentangle?
-A form of drawing started in the United States by a monk and an artist.
-A drawing made using different lines and patterns that fill the page.
-A relaxation tool.

Why Zentangle?
-Art is a great way to de-stress.
-Repetitive patterns help to calm ourbrains and focus our attention.
-Drawing helps to activate parts ofyour brain that control creativity.
-You’re in control.
What Do I Need to Make a
Zentangle?
- Materials you wil l need:
1. A pi e c e of pa pe r .2. A W r i t i n g T o o l3. Your imaginat ion .
Making a ZentangleStep 1: Draw a single line that goes from one end of your paper to the other. You can make it curved or straight.
Making a ZentangleStep 2: Add a few more lines. Those lines should go from one end of the paper to another. Make some lines cross over each other. This makes a few different shapes all over your paper.
Making a ZentangleStep 3: Fill in each shape with a different pattern. Make sure the patterns fill out the entire shape!
Tips and Tricks
-Start off with easy patterns andmake them more complex as youget comfortable.
-Use a marker.
-We all make mistakes! If youmake a mistake, don’t erase it.Instead, try and include it in yourpattern. Problem solve!
Tips and Tricks
-Use patterns from my handout, Google “zentangle patterns”, or try and make up your own!
-Trace a few shapes that overlap each other instead of drawing lines. Bowls are great tools to trace circles.
So you like zentangles? Try these out:1. Make a journal by folding pieces of paper in half. Draw the lines in Step 2. When you
get home each day, fill in a shape with a pattern as a way to document how your day went. Curvy lines often show happiness and calm. Thick, zigzag lines sometimes represent anxiety or anger.
1. Go big! Zentangle a sidewalk with chalk or a window using window markers.
1. Add color! Sometimes colors can help us document how we are feeling.
