How Are Shadows Made?Shadows are made when there is an object blocking the

light from hitting the surface.

The object needs to be a solid object. If it is clear

then the sun will pass through it, whereas a

solid object will block it.

This means that the shadow will

always be on the opposite side

of an object to the

sun or light.

Your TaskFind a toy or model that will create an interesting shadow.

Think: How will the sun change how the shadow appears on the ground?

ActivityIn the morning, place a toy or model on some paper and draw around it. DO NOT MOVE THE MODEL OR PAPER!! Leave it in the same spot and return to it at lunchtime. At lunchtime draw around the shadow again, you will hopefully see that the shadow has moved. Again, DO NOT MOVE ANYTHING! Leave it all out until teatime. At teatime draw around the shadow for one last time. Again it should have moved.

Alternative activityRather than drawing around a model you might want to get someone in your family to draw around you! Draw around your feet with chalk – this will be where you need to stand each time.Ask someone in your family to draw around your shadow in the morning, lunchtime and at teatime.
