People have used images to tell stories throughout history.

Cave Paintings date from 30,000 BCE

Images effectively convey ideas and events to the populations that

could not read text.

Images have a universality that

transcend (rise above) language.

What is a graphic

novel?

• Same format as comic books but longer in length

• Text & mostly illustrations present information

• Book-length, usually contains one story

Six Main Elements of a

Graphic Novel

1.Page 2.Panel 3.Pictures 4.Captions 5.Speech (and Thought)

Balloons 6.Comic FX Lettering

Graphic Novel Elements Pages consist of a variety of elements

• Panels-squares or rectangles that

contain a single scene • Gutters-space between panels • Dialog Balloons-contain

communication between/among characters

• Thought Balloons-contain a

character’s thoughts • Captions-contain information

about a scene or character • Sound Effects-visual sound clues

i.e.. Wonk! Pow!

Text In Graphic Novels

• Although text is minimal it is still very important!!!!!!

• so a script is necessary. • Space limits the number of words in a

graphic novel. • but this limit only makes them more

valuable!!!!!!

How to Read a

Graphic Novel Page

Graphic novels are read left to right, just like traditional texts

Dialog Balloons

dialog balloons are read left to right or top to bottom as is appropriate to the graphic novel
