Converting decimals, percents and fractionsNOTES

Fraction to decimal

Numerator (top number) divided by denominator (bottom number)

Example

this would be 5 divided by 8 *it does not matter which is bigger, just top divided by bottom. That is also just how to type it into

calculator.

Decimal to percent

Multiple decimal by 100

Some students remember it by moving two decimal spots right

Why would it need to be 100?

Why two decimal spots?

*I remember this because it does not have a percent, which looks like a 100, it needs a 100. By multiplying it I am giving it a percent sign

Examples

Example

.18 X 100=18%. .09 X 100 =9%

1.86 moved two decimal spots would be186%

Percent to decimal

Divide percent by 100

Some students move it two spots left

*I remember because it has a % and I need to get rid of it divide it away

Example

43%/100 = .43. 6%/100 = .06

58% = .58

Decimal to fraction

The numbers in decimal will be the numerator

The denominator of the fraction will be the place value of the last digit in the decimal.

Simplify

Examples

.06 = because the 6 is in the hundredths place

Simplify

Fraction to percent

Fraction needs to be converted to decimal first

Then from decimal into percent

Example

=.125 .125 X 100= 12.5%

Percent to fraction

Change percent to decimal

Change decimal to fraction

Simplify

Example

124%/100 = 1.24 =

Because the 4 digit is in the hundredths place
