Philosophy and Spirit

I am a human being. A human being is capable

of asking questions and in trying to find

answers, is capable of evolving.

Question – Am I evolving? Am I becoming

better?

Thinking Green is part of evolving at

Individual, Family, Community, National and

Global level.

Individual Level

Introspect your Habits and Assumptions. To start with, ask some basic and mundane questions about how you live, what are your habits, your likes and dislikes, your life style. Examples

Water use – Direct & Indirect

How much water for my bath? – Shower or Bucket?

Is my Hot Water Geyser on 24 X 7? or for short time?

What kind of Towel I use – Thick, Large, Turkish, or Medium size, Thin Turkish? Wash Towel everyday or intermittently?

Contd…..

Individual Level

Similarly, one can ask many questions of oneself in many areas.

Examples

Food – at Home, in Office, at Restaurants – What size serving?

How much wasted?

Car – Fuel efficient, suitable size, or Gas guzzling SUV?

A.C. especially in Car – do I keep at highest setting all the

time, or high initial, then at lower setting?

Exhaust fan in toilets – at home, office – “On” all the time, or

programmer fixed?

Lighting – Incandescent or LED? Need based or excessive?

Charity Begins at Home – To Go Green, begin with yourself –

Remember what Mahatma Gandhi said “ There is enough for

Everyone’s Need but not enough for Everyone’s Greed”

Corporate Level – Suggested

Approach

Use of better catalyst for better conversion efficiencies and better energy efficiencies

Use of enzymes as catalysts

Automation for precision controls

Optimize the packaging requirement –eliminate overpackaging

Introduce eco-friendly / bio-degradable / bulk / recyclable packaging

Minimize effluent generation (reduction at source and segregation concept)

Bioremediation eg. Chlorinated residueContd…..

Treat the effluents properly to avoid land and life damages down stream

Recycle the treated water – Industrial, sewage

Treat even canteen waste / make use of it

Implement Quality Systems and Environment management systems with a view to achieve a frame work of continual improvement.

Establish / monitor / Improve water / energy / RM / consumption norms - OPG

Minimize travel requirements – use emails – phones –video conference - SPG

Spread awareness regarding the importance of judicious use of resources and the role an individual can play in the efforts

“Triple Bottom Line” Approach

Concepts like IPM, INM, ICM in Agriculture

Skill Development – GOI’s NSDC initiative

Excerpts from Mr. Y C Deveshwar’s Speech

This ‘commitment beyond the market’ shapes the

quality of ITC’s partnerships with the various

constituents of its value chains—farmers,

suppliers, employees and the state. Such a

commitment propels ITC to contribute far beyond

servicing financial capital to enlarging economic,

social and environmental capital for the nation.

This unique spirit of synergizing business

objectives with a larger sense of social and

environmental purpose is what we call a ‘triple

bottom line approach’ —a powerful idea that has

inspired ITC’s transformation and is at the core of

its business strategies.
