Pre-Production During our planning and research we looked at varies Film 4

films like Hunger, This is England, Four Lions, Attack the Block etc in order to learn and understand Film 4’s ethos, themes and ideology. We also looked at BSR conventions and opening sequence conventions so we can incorporate them in our opening sequence.

After watching Film 4 films and learning about their ethos. We clearly saw that Film 4 tackle real life issues like terrorism etc, which can seen in Four Lions and Hunger. So me and my partner decided to use a current real life issue. Which was unemployment and gang violence because our target audiences are if age 16-24, this is where they can choose to leave school or carry on with their education. This is where most teenagers choose the wrong option without thinking ahead, so me and my partner decided to base our film about a teenager who left school at 16 and couldn’t get a job so he turn to gang violence.

Production We had to use gritty locations because one of Film 4’s ideology

is to use real location instead of sets because sets cost a lot of money to build. Also had choose public places like the park etc because it’s free to use which will helps keep the budget low.

We had limited access to new media technology like HD cameras because Film 4 films are made under low budget. We couldn’t use any special effects, CGI and green screen because it will ruin the verisimilitude it’s not part of Film 4’s ethos. So we filmed our opening sequence using a camcorder, tripod and rode mic.

Also during editing we couldn’t use sophisticated editing software like Final Cut because we didn’t shoot our opening sequence in HD, which narrowed our choice in terms of editing, for example we wanted to use a particular font for our credits but we couldn’t because the software we used cannot import fonts.

Production

We decided to call our production company RED BUS PRODUCTION because red buses are iconic symbol of Britain and this emphasizes that this is a BRS film and Film 4 tend use a lot of independent production companies to produce their films.

Production

We have to used a British cast, made up of new talent which is part of Film 4’s ethos. From our research we can found out that using British cast, made up of new talent is part of Film 4’s ethos. Which can be seen in most of their films like Four Lions and East is East. So we decided to use new, untrained actors.

DistributionThe film will be shown in independent theatres

like Phoenix Cinema and The Lexi Cinema. We also found out that Optimum Releasing has

distributed Film 4 films like ‘Attack the Block’ and ‘This is England’ so we decided to use Optimum Releasing to distribute our film.

Film 4 will also telecast our film on channels Film 4 and Channel 4.

We will use viral marketing to market our film because it’s free and we can reach our target audience quicker because most teenagers spent some time on the internet.
