Scientists have proposed that a force called darkenergy is behind the acceleration or,alternatively, that current understanding ofgravity must be modified. If dark energy is theculprit, at least two explanations are possible.

A new project called the Dark Energy Survey(DES) will aim to solve this mystery by studyingthe history of cosmic expansion and the extentto which dark energy may have stymied theclumping together of galaxies throughout space.

These observations will explore whetherSagittarius A* is a black hole or an exotic objectsuch as a naked singularity. If it is a black hole,does it behave the way general relativity says itshould?
