What are the 8 characteristics of life? (what makes something alive?)

ALL Living things… Are Highly organized and contain many complex chemical substances Are Made up of one or more cells (smallest unit of life)

Use energy Have a definite form & limited size Have a limited life span Grow Respond to changes in the environment Reproduce

Non living things may show one – or even a few of these characteristics….. but they never show of them!

Living things are Similar because they use some of the same specific activities to maintain life

We call these activities LIFE PROCESSES or FUNCTIONS

What do living things do to stay

alive? (What life processes/life functions

do they use?)

1.NUTRITION the process by which an

organism takes in substances

from its environment

and turns them into a form it

can use.

Two Types of Nutrition:

a. Autotrophic Nutrition- the process in which organisms

synthesize (make) their own

food

b. Heterotrophic Nutrition- the process in which organisms must

obtain food from an outside source

2. TRANSPORT

the process by which

substances (ex: nutrients and oxygen) travel

through out an organism

3. RESPIRATION

the process by which oxygen and glucose combine to make energy (ATP).

(Chemical energy is released)

ATP-chemical energy used to fuel cells

4.SYNTHESIS

the process in which simple

substances are combined

chemically to form more complex

substances (making stuff)

Going from simple to complex

small small large +

5.GROWTH

the process by which

living things increase

in size

6. EXCRETION the process by which

organisms remove

Metabolic wastes

(cellular waste)

7.REGULATION The process in which all of

life activities and functions that help to maintain balance are coordinated

(carried out mainly by the Endocrine System and the Nervous System)

8. REPRODUCTION

the process by

which living

things produce

new organisms

of their own kind

Ex: Asexual Reproduction and

Sexual Reproduction

9.METABOLISM

The process involving all of the chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out life processes

10. HOMEOSTASIS the process by which organisms

maintain a stable internal environment ( in balance )
