What is migration?

• The movement of people from one place to another to live, usually with the intention of it being permanent or semi-permanent.

• People may choose to migrate (voluntary) or may be compelled to migrate (forced).

• Examples?• Look at the two maps. For each one write

a sentence to describe the main trends shown.

Why do people migrate?

• The reasons why they move can be divided into PUSH & PULL factors

• PUSH FACTORS: war, poor housing, poor sanitation, no work or poorly paid work, famine, drought, natural disasters etc.

• PULL FACTORS: stable government, good housing, work & well-paid jobs, good housing, education opportunities etc.

• Watch the clip below. Identify the causes for the migration and the consequences.
