Reading tReading Music and Fashion, a British Love Affair leDifferent musical genres have always had a particular look or style associated with them. For many people, the birthplace of this love affair between music and fashion is the United Kingdom and particularly London. In the late 1950s and early 1960s young adults had extra money for the first time. The first clothes shops for young people opened in London in Carnaby Street and the King’s Road. In those days your clothes said a lot about what music you listened to. The Mods listened to music from groups like The Who and the Small Faces and were famous for their tailor-made suits, thin ties and cashmere jumpers. They had cool haircuts like the actors in French Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) films. They also preferred scooters, like Vespas and Lambrettas to motorbikes because they were a symbol of Italian style.

In the Seventies the punk movement was about anarchic music and clothes. The famous punk band The Sex Pistols often met in a shop called ‘SEX’ in the King’s Road owned by their manager, Malcolm McLaren with clothes designed by Vivienne Westwood. They had an aggressive style with spiky hair. Their torn T-shirts were often offensive and they wore safety pins in their jackets and jewellery with spikes or chains.

Glam Rock was another popular musical genre in the early seventies in the UK, with music from singers and musicians like David Bowie and T-Rex. Glam is short for glamour and the musicians clothes were glamorous and outrageous, particularly their platform-soled boots. They often had long hair and wore heavy makeup.

The eighties was the time of the New Romantics with bands like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. Many of these bands used synthesizers and started the electronic sound of 80s pop music. Like the glam rock stars, the new romantics often wore makeup and had a very androgynous style. In the beginning they wore frilly shirts, like the English Romantics, but later they changed these for sharp suits and wedge haircuts.
