Why Kibbie Dome Recycling?

The University of Idaho spends $800,000 a year for trash removal.

The Kibbie Dome plays a big part in adding to that large amount of trash.

All the recyclables that we can take from with in the Kibbie can effectively lower this number and move us closer to a zero waste campus.

General Info

Currently the is no consistent recycling effort with in the Kibbie Dome for recycling events

This year a group of student from a Business 378 team implemented a outside recycling effort that has been very successful, we would like to build on this success by moving our efforts inside the Kibbie Dome.

Our Mission

To establish the feasibility of implementing a recycling program at the ASUI Kibbie Dome for inside events.

Page 6: What COULD The UNIVERSITY DO with an EXTRA $800,000?

Critical Success Factors

Implementation of recycling project upon success of trial run

No monetary loss: no additional money being spent by the university

Formation of a feasible plan to recycle in Kibbie

Explore feasibility of expanding recycling to sporting events at other venues on campus. UISC will direct options after implementation.

What We Did?

Collaborated with our sponsor to make the right contacts

Determined the waste stream What is actually recyclable?

Facilitate storage and removal What are we going to do with the recyclables

Gain the necessary materials Bags, bins, gloves, sings and posters,

promotion Run a pilot test

Page 8: What COULD The UNIVERSITY DO with an EXTRA $800,000?

Pre-Pilot Assumptions

Waste Stream: Estimated 4-5 bag of plastics, less than one bag

of cans 4-6 bins full of plastics

Storage and removal Collaborate with the tailgating dumpster for

removal We need to transport the recyclables to the

parking lot Materials

8 bins with Liners and signage, plastic gloves for volunteers, 10+ bags

What we learned

We underestimated our waste stream Students were found to be much more

recycle conscience than alumni Gave us great info for number of

volunteers needed, total clean up time, and overall effort needed

We found that recycling within the Kibbie Dome is a feasible effective way of reducing waste at the University of Idaho

The Future Plan

We have created an extensive plan of how to recycle inside the Kibbie Dome to be followed in the future.

To move closer towards a zero waste Kibbie Dome we need: 5 year plan Running promotions and marketing Student, faculty and community involvement
