One of the most searched for items on the Internet remains to this day, "What Cities Did Hurricane Katrina Hit"? When these photos came to me yet again in an email - I decided to share them with you, for perhaps you are looking for some sympathy and want to be remembered for living through one of the greatest tragedies in America...whether you are from New Orleans, or not, the entire Gulf Coast US was hit hard. All the communities still struggling to grasp what happened and who are still struggling with the "re-build" need to be remembered and perhaps even prayed for. Hurricane Katrina hit Grand Isle very hard, on August 28-29, 2005, destroying or damaging homes and camps along the entire island. Katrina's surge reached 5 ft (1.5 m) at Grand Isle. Large waves severely damaged the only bridge linking Grand Isle to the mainland.Grand Isle (French: Grande-Île) is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, located on a barrier island of the same name. The island is at the mouth of Barataria Bay where it meets the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 1,541; during summers, the population has increased to over 20,000. Grand Isle is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. - Wiki.Grand Isle's only land connection to the mainland is via an automobile causeway bridge, near the west end of the island, which connects it to southern Lafourche Parish, Louisiana.*** It is interesting that in October 2008, " Representatives from the American Planning Association gathered with a team of Dutch planners, urban designers, and landscape architects; representatives from the Dutch embassy and their ministries of planning, transportation, public works and water management; and local architects and planners for a workshop on how New Orleans might incorporate best practices and lessons learned by the Dutch on how to live with — and derive value from — water." http://www.planning.org/katrina/I guess the point is that other nations live on and around levies, and face disasters, too. Only the difference is that they have learned to cope and compensate for their unstable landscape -- like the Dutch. Why is it that the US has such a problem with this? Governmental Apathy? Laziness? Not enough money to keep and protect our nation's people and historic lands? What do you think?
