Narratives

The definition of narrative is an amount of plotted sequencesthat have been placed together to make a story. I stronglybelieve that narratives within film trailers are extremelystereotypical to the genre of the film trailer, this would bebecause that the targeted audience are also verystereotypical to the film genre, some examples of this

would be, within the Romance genre women at all ages aretargeted and within the Action genre a fairly young maleaudience are targeted

However, targeted audiences can easily be changed due to alarge amount of time within film trailers two or more

hybrids are usually used within the trailer, this is to makethe film appeal to a larger audience, Hybrids are two ormore genres coming together within one film.

Narrative Structure - Action Taken

Taken is a 2008 French action thrillerfilm co-written and produced byLuc Besson, starring Liam Neeson,Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen.The screenplay was written byBesson and Robert Mark Kamen,

and directed by Pierre Morel.Neeson plays a former CentralIntelligence Agency (CIA) operativewho sets about tracking down hisdaughter after she is kidnapped byhuman traffickers while travelling in

France. The sequel, Taken 2, wasreleased on 3 October 2012.

Taken starts with a stereotypical family atbirthday party, this technique is used within

the action genre because it leaves the

audience never knowing what to expect

within the trailer

Within the action trailer structure , the

audience always have to feel empathy for one

of the characters, for example it could be a

child or an animal, however within this trailer

the young woman is the character who the

audience feel empathy for, my reasons for thiswould be that she looks very child like for

example being very natural, colorful and

drinking a large milkshake, theses are all the

things a stereotypical adult would do. Also the

non-diegetic sound that has been used is very

dramatic and almost depressing.

The next scene is of two young girls,

very exited to be going on holidaytogether, however within this clip the

destination has been announced of

where the two girls are going has the

brunette girl states You know my friend

Amanda? Her cousin has asked us to

spend the vacation with her in Paris!

typically the audience are able to tell that this destination is where things start to go

wrong.

The scene then goes on to a phone

ringing in someone's bag, has the phone

is ringing non-diegetic heartbeat musicstarts to play, the Mise-en-scene that has

been used in this clip is very plain, this is

because all the focus needs to be on the

phone. This instantly causes panic for the

audience, as they will not know what to

expect.

Narrative Structure - Action TakenThe next shot is a close up shot of the

daughter talking to her father on the

phone, when she looks out the window

she see her friend being taken, which

relates to the film title. The daughter looks

very panicked and distressed, however this

is would shock the audience how quickly

the friend is being taken and this would

also make the audience very curious towhy is she being taken?

Another close up shot is then shown of the

daughter in distress, knowing that the two

men are now looking for her, due to the

fact that she quietly whispered they're

coming and typically the dad used to be an

agent, and pulls out a suitcase which

contains all of his useful equipment.

Overall, when watching this scene the

audience are instantly able to tell that the

genre of the film is action, I believe that this

trailer has made the genre very clear andobvious.

The father then explains to his daughter

that she is going to be taken by the twomen, and tells her to hide under a bed,

which then relates to how her father still

sees her as a child, due to the fact that it

is a childish thing to do. A point of view

show is then shown of a man walking in

the room as the daughter is under the

bed (circled in red)

As the father tells his daughter that she

is going to be taken, she is suddenly

dragged from under the bed, which is

very suppressing, due to how quick it

was.The non dietetic sound that was used

created a lot of suspense as well, the

non diegetic sound was a very high pitch

screeching build up, this sound gave a

clue to the audience that sound is going

to happen though.

One of the two men, the picks up the phone, and the father then confidently and seriously

explains

I dont know who you are, what you want, if you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I dont

have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have required over a

very long career, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you, if you let me daughtergo now that will be the end of it, but if you dont I will look for you, I will find you, and I will

kill you

I believe that this quote is very important to this trailer as it again tells the audience the genre

of the film and announces to the audience that this film is also going to be very violent. The

non diegetic music that is played during this scene is a piano which is very sympathetic and

passionate, and this will make the audience want to see the film, due to how curious this

trailer will make them.

During the father dramatically explaining to the villains what will happen if they dont release his

daughter a montage is the shown these are some screen shots of the montage, I believe that it is veryimportant to use a montage in a trailer due to the fact that it shows the genre of the film, also it makes

the audience want to watch the film more.

By looking at the clips that was used within the montage it is easy to say that this film is an action film.

summeryoverall, within this trailer I thought that the plot was very

easy to read and the audience would know the plot beforewatching the film, this film also seemed very fighting andviolence based, which would appeal to a specific targetedaudience which are young males aged between 15-28, who

are very violence orientated, could be stereotypically quitenerdy.

The structure of the trailer is that a father and daughter havea very close bond, which could relate to the audience,when watching, and the suddenly the audience gets

kidnapped and its all down to the father to find hisdaughter, within films like this (especially the action genre)I believe that it is very easy to guess the plot before seeingthe film.

Orphan is a 2009 American psychologicalhorror film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Vera Farmiga, PeterSarsgaard, and Isabelle Fuhrman. Thefilm centers on a couple who, after thedeath of their unborn child, adopt amysterious nine-year old girl. Orphan

was produced by Joel Silver and SusanDowney of Dark Castle Entertainmentand Leonardo DiCaprio and JenniferDavisson Killoran of Appian WayProductions.[2] The film was releasedtheatrically in the United States on July24, 2009.[3] The film received mixed

critical reviews although Fuhrman'sperformance as Esther was acclaimed.

A non-diegetic womans voice is played as a

over the shoulder shot is shown of figure

overlooking at hyper children, which calmly

states Were seeing kids for the first time

this weekend, Im ready to adopt

This quote instantly makes the audience very

curious, to why this woman wants to adopt?

Why wasnt she ready before?

The woman the finds a young girl in her

room painting, when the girl is found non-

diegetic innocent piano music is then played,

this tells the audience that she is the perfect

child for the woman.

Overall within this trailer is does not seem

like a horror, it seems like more of a drama.

man states

youre just has much as this family as

Danny and Max

The cinematography than flashes on to

both of the young children, I believe

that this trailer is introducing all of thecharacters, however this could be seen

as boring for horror fans.

When looking at the adopted girls

costume, it is very attentive and

niche to watch the average American

school child would typically wear, I

believe that is would make the

audience feel very specious, make

think that the girl might now be as

perfect as she makes out.

When the adopted girl goes into the class

room a patronizing bulling then makes a

comment about her appearance by

confidently saying

Oh look, Little Bow Peep wants her

outfit back

After the bullying girl states this the rest

of the class laugh at the adopted girl, this

tells the audience that the girl that made

the comment is likely to be the ring

leader.

A close up shot is then shown of the

adopted girl as she stares at the bully in avery intimidating way.

This tells the audience that something is

likely to happen between the two girls.

Non-diegetic music starts to play, which

sounds very detained and almost

hunting.

The next scene that is shown is a low angle

wide shot of the adopted child having anaggressive tantrum in a public toilet, due to

how much she I kicking at the walls and

screaming, she doesnt look very healthy.

When looking at the lighting that has been

used within this shot, it is very dark and

gloomy, I believe that this scene was asurprise for the audience and tells the

audience that this young girl has a evil side.

A extreme close up shot of the adopted

girl is then shown, of her screaming and

giving direct address to the camera, theexpression on the adopted girls face is

very evil and aggressive, which could be

very intimidating for the audience and

also very unexpected.

I believe that this is a very dramatic

statement, which will leave the

audience very curious to what this

statement means. The non-diegeticmusic that was used in the background

was very hunting.

A close up shot is then shown, when

looking at the adopted childs costume,

she is wearing all black, which

symbolizes, evil and depressed, which

also relates to the adopted child.

Non-diegetic music is also played in the

background which states.

playground slide, I believe that this tells

the audience that the adopted girl is very

evil, as to the viewers watching the

trailer it is very obvious to who pushed

the girl from the playground.

I believe that this trailer becomes a lot

more gripping when a doctor calls the

mother and explainsIm calling from the institute

Which the audience instantly think is a

mental home, I believe that this was very

unexpected, and will leave the audience

was very curious

Overall I believe that the trailer was very gripping and unexpectedwhich I found was very inspirational when I create my own horrortrailer.

The overall structure of the horror trailer, started with a very happyand normal American family, who adopted a young child, when

watching the start of this trailer it would be hard to tell the genre ofit, as this trailer is not a stereotypical horror trailer.

As the trailer went on the adopted child started to become verysuspicious, for example having outrageous tantrums, as the trailerwent on a hospital called the mother to explain that the adopt girlwas originally in a mental hospital. I believe that this tells the genre

of the film within the trailer, a montage is then shown of the girlcausing disturbing fears to the family.
