Monday 14 th November 2016 Dear parents and carers, At this time of year teachers are busy writing end of year student reports and nominating students for recognition at our annual sports and presentation day assemblies. It’s also a time of reflection, when we look back at how much the children have grown in their learning and we begin to plan for 2017 and the next phase of learning. On another note, congratulations to Baileigh Barnes and Leeroy Rothero for their outstanding efforts at the Public Speaking Challenge hosted by Blacktown City Council two weeks ago. Baileigh came first in his category and Leeroy was a runner up in his category. This Wednesday, both boys, along with ten of our senior students will attend the Child Friendly Community Conference where Baileigh will be one of the keynote speakers. #proudparents Our local engraver has been very busy lately preparing medals for many of our students. All students who hand in their medal forms by Wednesday 30 November will be eligible to participate in the Medal Recipients Celebration on Friday 2 December. Students who hand in their medal forms after this date are still eligible for a medal even though they miss out on the celebration. The final medals for the year will be presented at our Christmas assembly on 15 December. It’s been a long wait for the new school caps, and the manufacturer assures us that we should have them by 30 November. Thank you for your patience boys and girls. As part of Blacktown City Counci l’s continuing upgrades to improve facilities, the public pathway from Karangi Road to Luxford Road will be reconstructed. Monday 14th November 2016 Dear parents and carers,

At this time of year teachers are busy writing end of year student

Weather permitting; construction is due to commence on or about 21

November.

Finally, make sure that you put aside some time this week to view the

incredible artworks by all of our students. Our hall has been

transformed into a gallery of discovery. There are artworks on boards,

on windows, hanging from the ceiling and suspended in mid-air!

My Voice, My Place, My Story

Last week I was very proud to take two of our students to the Public

Speaking Challenge hosted by Blacktown City Council.

I am very pleased to report that both our students spoke confidently

and with passion about their chosen topics.

Baileigh was awarded first place in his age group and Leeroy was

runner up in his age group.

Baileigh has been invited to represent children from Western Sydney

as a keynote speaker at the Child Friendly Community Conference at

Rooty Hill RSL this Wednesday.

I would like to congratulate both Baileigh and Leeroy on their success.

Year 5 Leadership Day 9/11/2016

Our year 5 students will all be

leaders in our school next year

either in official roles such as

School Leader, Sport House

Captain, Student Representative

Councillor or as year 6 students supporting students, their

families and community members.

To help prepare our future leaders, we held a leadership day in

which the students participated in a range of workshops

designed to build their leadership skills. Students participated in

a team building activity; worked collaboratively in a ‘think tank’

session to propose possible improvement projects for 2017 and

they had the opportunity to hear from experienced leaders - the

2016 school leaders and Officer Paul Sneesby about what skills

are necessary to lead others.

Our year 5 students were amazing and they demonstrated

impressive leadership and teamwork skills. They have also

identified some interesting ideas for next year’s improvement

projects!

Congratulations year 5!

Kangaroos

The Kangaroo students are interested in

construction and investigating how things

work. They tested a range of kitchen tools

to find out which ones made the best

bubbles.

Irfan and Xavier discovered that the

faster they turned the handles on egg

beaters in soapy water, the more bubbles

they made.

This activity developed into an

exploration of other machines. The

gears construction set helped Irfan

and Michael to work out how a

complex series of interlocking gears

work.

In another exploration of machines at

work, Killa and Asipeli created

colourful artworks with a salad spinner.

Turning the handle, made the inner

bowl rotate quickly and swirl the paint

to create unique colour patterns.

Page 7: WHALAN PUBLIC SCHOOL€¦ · put them together to make a robot”; Grace - “a robot car” and Kayden - “a spider robot, you press buttons”. The interest in robots led to investigations

Some responses to the question, “What is a machine?" came from

Bentley - “a driving car”; Michael - “you get these round things and

put them together to make a robot”; Grace - “a robot car” and Kayden

- “a spider robot, you press buttons”.

The interest in robots led to investigations of how robots help people.

Noah wondered if a robot could clean his room and Asipeli wanted to

know how a robot moves.

The children spent several weeks constructing a model robot from

recycled materials. It has buttons that turn and moving arms.

Abdul Ahad, Edith, Xavier and

Kayden made a simple pulley

system that could lift a bucket of

blocks.

They are very

excited to introduce

Robo the robot!

Library Books

Our school has many wonderful resources for students to borrow and

enjoy. All of these resources need to be accounted for at the end of

the year. Students will be reminded to return overdue Library and

Twilight Tales books.

Many students still have overdue books and may need help to look

for these at home. If a book cannot be found or it has been

damaged, it is the family's responsibility to let the school know.

Damaged books need to be returned to school so they can be

accounted for in our library computer system.

If you have any questions about overdue books please contact

Mrs Emmett in the library.

Library borrowing to take home will finish at the end of Week 7.

Twilight Tales borrowing will finish at the end of Week 9. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Page 20: WHALAN PUBLIC SCHOOL€¦ · put them together to make a robot”; Grace - “a robot car” and Kayden - “a spider robot, you press buttons”. The interest in robots led to investigations

What to do:

Add all dough ingredients into food processor. Turn on slowly until combined, then turn up and run

until a dough ball is formed. Take out and wrap in canola sprayed cling wrap for next class (or at least 1

hour)

Put saucepan – filled halfway with water – on medium heat on the stove top

Grab rested dough and cut into 2 – 4 pieces. Run each piece through the rollers on the pasta machine

starting with the widest setting, put the dough through 2 or 3 times, then go down a setting until the

second last setting

Put it through the fettuccine cutters (the thicker cutters) or cut into strips with a sharp knife

Lay pasta on a floured tray for 5 – 10 minutes to let it dry a little

When the water is boiling place the pasta into the pot, cook until al dente – this should take 4 – 5

minutes

Set the colander in the sink and drain the pasta

Chop the herbs finely

Place the drained pasta, salt and pepper, herbs and olive oil back into the saucepan, mix well and serve

into 3 serving bowls

Place on the dining tables

Page 22: WHALAN PUBLIC SCHOOL€¦ · put them together to make a robot”; Grace - “a robot car” and Kayden - “a spider robot, you press buttons”. The interest in robots led to investigations

Reduce heat to low.

Add very finely torn Kale and stir through.

Add salt and pepper and give another stir then turn off heat.

Place a lid on the saucepan and place to the back of the stove top until needed.

When pasta is almost ready, divide into 3 serving bowls and take over to the group making pasta, so
